Friday will mark 35 years since the Cardinals traded Willie McGee to the Oakland Athletics. Though he finished the year in the AL, his .335 NL batting average was good enough to win the NL batting title.

For the first time since the Whitey Herzog days of the 1980s, the Cardinals were in the thick of a pennant race. So it was fitting that Ozzie Smith and Willie McGee led the Cardinals to an extra-inning victory over the Astros on this date in 1996.
