Army's report card from the assylum members

Post by Nublues69 »

Lets get a consensus of what we feel army deserves as a grade.

I would say all in all i rate army as a b+ gm and with the stanley cup he won curves him to A-

A- GM, one of the best in the NHL.

Team Canada management group
First Stanley Cup in STL
Since 2010 Blues are 5th in the NHL in Wins and Points
9th in the NHL in Playoff Wins
Since 2010 Blues are one of only 10 teams to win a Cup

The longer a GM is in one spot, the tougher it is for him as far as an exercise like this is concerned. Everyone is going to have a misstep or two in 15 years.

Solid A

Those are great benchmarks to add to this convo. I agree completely

As a GM he gets an A or an A+. What are your defining metrics? Most wins? Most Points? Stanley Cups? Win Percentage? Points Percentage? As highlighted in other threads, Army is 10th all time in Wins and Points. He has the 2nd best Win and Point percentage amongst those GM's in the top 10. He has won a Stanley Cup. There are a handful of modern era GM's that have won multiple titles. That is where you can drop Armstrong's grade from A+ to A. But then I have to ask the question, what is the grade scale? If you grade anything lower than A and say A- then that mean's that something like 25 other franchises are currently employing failing GM's and I just don't believe that is the case. There are another handful of franchises who are consistently competing who deserve a B or better. I believe the Av's guy is after they won correct? So you have Zito, Mcrimmon, BriseBois, Army and then Bowman with another franchise. I'm sure I am missing someone.

Only 2 GM's maybe 3 can't remember have won with multiple orgs.

4.5 star here as an operating General Manager when all aspects of the job he has done are considered.

If you put a curve on his grade via against his peers he's probably a 4.9 star.

Without the shut down due to COVID there is a very real chance the Blues win another title

for sure, it looked like it was trending that way. I will put a caveat. I could definitely see if this year we don't make the playoffs ending up on the wrong side of the 90 point mark and it's not directly due to injury, you could give him an A- because that would be 3 of the last 4 years not making the playoffs, even tho statistically 2 years ago the Blues make the playoffs in some season with their point total.

I'll steal a line from Army because it's kind of how I like to judge a lot of things in segments. Did he leave it better than he found it? If we repeat last year, he 100 percent can say he left it better than he found it. If we scuttle a bit, you would still say the team is set up cap wise and youth wise in a much better spot than most, but you can start to make the judgement if we have the right young leadership in order to drive the ship with Thomas and Kyrou. These next few years are going to be on the back of them setting the standard. We already know guys like Schenner are the real deal in the locker room. But they aren't expected to drive the play now.

Grade A.
If he won multiple Cups during his tenure, then it would be A+, particularly without ever having the services of a "generational" player, whom at the time of winning the Stanley Cup would be considered one of the top-5 no-question leading superstars actually playing in the NHL -- i.e. Ovechkin, Crosby, Price, Kane, McDavid, Bedard (not yet). (And by the way, to head off the stupid Smelling, a player like that can be acquired via draft, a trade, or free-agent signing...they do not have to be drafted #1 Overall or in the Top 5 to potentially become that way.)

Solid A. He's got an ownership that needs/wants him to consistently compete so he's done a fabulous job doing so. He's acquired talent with great trades and drafting well even though they rarely have selected in the top half let alone the top 10. Only down side has been some contracts extensions or FA that were misses and that happens to everyone.

A. Cup, 100 point seasons, sustained success, roster transitions, leaving a solid team.

More important now, what will his grade be as a mentor.

He gets an A+ from me. He might be the best GM St. Louis has ever had. Whitey Herzog in the early 80's when he transformed the Cardinals is the only other GM I can think of with the same success. I've been a fan since the beginning, and I've never felt better about better about the Blue's organizational depth.

A+

Look at what Army is leaving for Steen and then across the city at what Moe is leaving for Bloom.

No grade needed…he’s the best in the business. The other GM’s get the grades.
