Haven't read thru (why would I) but someone the other day said something along the line of, "where would the Cards be without Burly," to which my guess would be just about the same exact place they are now or possibly better.
Why? Well, a +1.7 bWAR to this point in the season might have also been done or exceeded if Church had been in place of Burly all season. We don't know, but my guess is JJW would currently have better than a +1.7 bWAR if he'd have been with the Cards all year instead of Burly.
Cut down WAR all you want, be it takes into account much more than just BA which is what some still seem to gravitate to.
Actually IF the Cards hadn't given Walker the leash all season to once again struggle, and would have started the season with 2 more competent SP's than Mikolas and Fedde, it's quite possible they're right in the middle of the current playoff push.
Kinda funny, but before Sunday's game, they mentioned how the Cards were 5.5 games behind the Wild Card, while on the same date in 2011, the Cards were 10.5 games back of the Wild Card.
