Decision on Pallante may be coming today

Post by ramfandan »

After last night's nightmare outing for Andre Pallante, manager Oli Marmol stated in his postgame media comments that there is “a lot” the Cardinals must take into consideration as they map out the next steps for Pallante.

What’s “best” for Pallante and the Cardinals’ starting pitch depth are factors that need to be considered.
Said Marmol '“There are more moving parts to it, for sure,

He indicated those steps will be discussed Wednesday by the coaching staff.
In his previous nine starts after tossing seven scoreless innings in Pittsburgh on July 1, Pallante has a 9.80 ERA in 44 2/3 innings.

If there was a good option he would already be in St Louis.

If Pallante is put on the IL or demoted to the pen, who takes his place in the rotation?

For the rest of this season, Pallante may have to stay in the rotation. The season is shot anyway. If he goes to the bullpen, who takes his place in the rotation? There aren’t any good options, here or in the minors.

I would like to see them shut him down. He has shown promise. Hard to know how he is replaced but good news is replacement can’t do any worse.

A reset. Designed in part to see who has the stamina and endurance to navigate an entire season. Part of the plan.

Both Pallante and Libby are at the base of the wall. The only question is, is, - is it rookie fatigue? Or lack of talent.

That’s what the assessments are for. The plan is right on track.

Maybe Mikolas could do a double shift and start two games out of every five.

Make Mikolas pitch on 3 days rest, as long as it’s home starts only. He’s been our best pitcher at Busch

That’s what the coaches are discussing today. Nobody at AAA seems ready ti take that spot.
One option would be… ok for every 5th start should that be sa bullpen game. Pitch three relievers 2 innings each, for example , for the first 6 innings. Then finish with your usual backend guys.
With 29 games remaining, they would need to do that just for 5 games.
If this was a decision in June, I would not do that but with 29 games left, if I was a coach at the meeting I would put forward that as an option especially if there is no consensus for one pitcher to replace Pallante.

Yep.

Unless there is someone in AAA or in the pen who needs a run at starting, just leave him be I guess

If Curtis Taylor is healthy he's had a good year in Memphis. 3.35 ERA, 1.16 WHIP... he's 29yo so not really a prospect or much hope for the future, but he'd probably be more effective than Pallante right now.

36yo Aaron Wilkerson has also pitched well lately at Memphis, with similar numbers.

So we had one guy waiting in the minors who has been knocking on the door for several seasons now (McGreevey)...and that's it.

Quite the organization POBO MOZO is leaving behind.

The caveat to that is Curtis Taylor at Memphis, that 3dender mentioned above. The reason they haven't summoned him yet is that he's not on the 40-man roster.

Looking over his splits it's insane how much the wheels have fallen off in August.

He was fine-not-great in the previous 4 months, never with a WHIP over 1.45 and an opponents OPS over .763. Worst ERA was July with a 5.16, even though his WHIP and OPS were his best of the season that month.

In August opponents have a 1.021 OPS against him and he has a 2.045 WHIP and a 9.82 ERA... basically he's turning all opposing batters into Ohtani.

He's at a career high in innings pitched but only by like 20 innings more than last year, so that doesn't really seem like it can be the explanation.
