Compare any top defensive players stats from last year to the year priorpucknugget wrote: ↑25 Aug 2025 11:48 amCan you explain why you say "as of last year"?theograce wrote: ↑23 Aug 2025 19:39 pmIt’s a useless stat now…as of last yearHockey Pete wrote: ↑23 Aug 2025 19:31 pmI disagree, and IMO it's the single most important stat for puck possession. The year we won the Cup, I actively tracked the stat for the league and our Blues had the best GVA/TKA ratio of any team in the NHL from January to the Cup. ROR lead the league with 94TKA to only 33GVA, and almost our entire forward lines had a positive in that stat (something we haven't done since). TJ Oshie was the greatest Blue in that stat category.Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑23 Aug 2025 11:35 am The talk about the turnovers is mind boggling. Useless stat…players that have the puck, turn it over. I will say that the league play has shifted dramatically in this category, as turnovers reigned supreme last season...

Understood. I thought you were referring to how the NHL changed the recording of the Giveaway / Takeaway statistics last season compared to all previous seasons.
Re: Nazar gets paid
Not sure what they were doing different last year from a recording perspective, but they essentially butchered that category. It makes zero sense now for anyonepucknugget wrote: ↑26 Aug 2025 08:49 am Understood. You and Tim make a VERY valid point on tracking GVA, (big debate on that in 2023 with stat folks), as it's not consistent and some are even treating dump-in's where possession changes as a GVA, which to me is CRAZY as a lot of dump-in's are for simple shift changes.STL fan in MN wrote: ↑24 Aug 2025 22:40 pmI think his point is more about how the league seemingly changed the way they tracked giveaways and takeaways last season. League-wide, the giveaways skyrocketed for almost all players. Last year’s stats on that look nothing like before. While I would agree that generally speaking, possession and this giveaways/takeaways are very important, how the league tracks it seems to have gotten super screwy in the last year, rendering it rather meaningless.Hockey Pete wrote: ↑24 Aug 2025 21:37 pmI'm NOT comparing Nazar to ROR...Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑24 Aug 2025 10:28 amYou can’t compare ROR to a rookie on a terrible team. You made the statement that GVA/TKA is a useless stat, I simply stated I disagreed and stated why with a few examples.

Re: Nazar gets paid
From 1997 through the end of the 2023-2024 season, Hits + Giveaways + Takeaways were recorded by an NHL official in each building based upon a definition provided by the league. Many articles were written over the years highlighting the wide variance of those numbers for each city and each team (home vs away games) and so forth.
Starting last season, those statistics were taken away from an official in each building and instead, an algorithm using the Puck and Player Tracking system was implemented to automate the collection of those. Basically, they are recorded similarly to how your PS5 NHL25 video game tracks them. Meaning, software that is consistent in every building is now scoring those stats.
Are they right? Are they better? Couldn't tell you. All that is guaranteed is that consistency.
