Cardinals load the bases often

Post by sikeston bulldog2 »

Good morning.

A thing I’ve noticed with us. We load the bases a lot. That, at first glance is a great thing.

Not my point. My point is, many times, with runners on first and second, a hit does not score the runner from second. They stop at third. Then we don’t acore. Station to station.

Is this poor base running, lack of speed, or bad coaching at third.

One more run per game would be huge. Seems we have bases loaded when we could have a run, with runners on first and third, or first and second.

Noticed this last night. Any one else.

Yes last night they only got 1 run on a bases loaded, no out situation. Only run scored on a sac fly, which with a decent throw from LF, may have resulted in an inning ending DP. Interestingly , the Buccos also only got a SF when they had a bases loaded, no out situation later in the game. This kind of failure to do more is typical of poor hitting teams like the Pirates and Cardinals.

Walker hit a 107 mph shot to LF with the slow Gorman at second base, and I cannot blame the coach for not sending him. Any decent throw from Pham and Gorman would have been an easy out, and you don't want to make that first out at home plate. The Cardinals many players with below average speed is a big factor with their conservative baserunning approach.

Good. So I’m seeing it as it is.
Is there a stat that shows teams getting in a runner from third? And if so, I’d bet the top five are post season heavy.

Cards are one of 3 teams this season with no grand slams, according to Statmuse (along with Rangers and Royals). There seem to be like 1-5 teams every year but I'm not sure if Statmuse is showing that correctly.

I believe that Brant Brown refers to it as collecting hits. The Cardinals are generally pretty good about getting hits, but have no real power, so they have to rely on a bunch of guys getting timely hits to get those runs in.

When it happens, great, but it often ends in those situations in which runners are stranded on base. Or they might even get a run or two in, but they rarely have that big inning where someone hits a big HR to really put up a crooked number.

Yes sir. Seems that way. Just five times more getting that hit or homer, might would put us few games over .500. Minimal but a threshold none the less.
