Saggese at SS again today
With all the injuries that has plagued the team. His defensive versatility might keep him around for the rest of the season. And to help keep other players fresh late in the season.

With Masyn Winn (knee soreness) scratched from today’s #STLCards starting lineup, Thomas Saggese slides over to shortstop and Jose Fermin starts at second base.
Sooooooooo glad we get to see Saggese & Fermin instead of, oh I don't know..................JJW!

Bloom is evaluating which of these replacement guys have a chance for his 2026 roster, if any .
Not only how they play defensively but hit vs. mlb caliber pitching.

+1
This is mostly about 2026.
Winn is a keeper. JJ looks like he will be a keeper going forward.
You have Donovan who probably slides to OF.
But then you have to make decisions on:
Gorman
Saggese- utility?
Fermin- keep him?
Re: Saggese at SS again today
I wouldnt be surprised ifnfermin is released in offseason. His numbers are okay in limited sample this year but bad last 2 years even though he crushed memphis.
Anyways fermin is outnof options next year so we lose our flexibility with him, and they seemed no urgency to get him at bats this year when they have to make final decision on him with his options about to be gone so i think hes just gone next year as jj saggese and too many other are competing for roster spots.
They also have about 6 or 7 guys who could legitimately be claimed in rule 5 draft this offseason if they dont add them so they could move on. Maybe they try to trade him for amother low level player who doesnt take up 49 man roster spit instead of losing him for nothing cuz i could see a team taling chamce on him off waivers

Agree....especially on Fermin.Wattage wrote: ↑24 Aug 2025 11:18 amI wouldnt be surprised ifnfermin is released in offseason. His numbers are okay in limited sample this year but bad last 2 years even though he crushed memphis.

If he is out of options he’s most likely gone unless they trade someone(s).
And we still have to figure that Arenado is in the picture.

Re: Saggese at SS again today
At this point I would play Fermin and give him a chance to make his case. If he performs well, you decide who to keep/move. Fermin has an advantage because he's played OF in Memphis. He could open the possibility to trading Donovan for pitching.

No benefit at all in bringing JJ up in August, or maybe even this season.rockondlouie wrote: ↑24 Aug 2025 10:50 am John Denton

First, he's 100% earned a callup.
Second, bringing him up so he can get his feet wet, meet his teammates, find a place to live and learn St. Louis, experience big league travel, the media, ect.....is a HUGE BENEFIT, gives him a jumpstart toward 2026.
From a J. Denton column:
Masyn Winn, a leading candidate to win the National League’s Gold Glove award at shortstop in 2025, was promoted from Triple-A Memphis to the Cardinals on Aug. 18, 2023, and he raved about how the experience helped him get better prepared for his full rookie season in 2024.
Teams all around MLB are bringing up their top prospects (re: Tampa & Pirates this week).
Re: Saggese at SS again today
I agree. JJ should be brought up soon. He is ready to contribute at the show. Last night he got two hits off Chris Sale! and went 4 for 5 with 2 doubles and a walk. Made a couple outstanding plays at SS. No good reason to keep him in Memphis any longer, IMO.rockondlouie wrote: ↑24 Aug 2025 11:56 amRamFan08NY wrote: ↑24 Aug 2025 11:48 amNo benefit at all in bringing JJ up in August, or maybe even this season.rockondlouie wrote: ↑24 Aug 2025 10:50 am John Denton
