So how good will Mailloux be?

What? The Blues have an inflated and overstated view of Mailloux?
Who knows talent better? Montreal fans or our Blues scouts? Time will tell.
Re: So how good will Mailloux be?
Commentary on other commentary, no substance there. 'MY opinion is FAR more important', and just as meaningless.a smell of green grass wrote: ↑23 Aug 2025 10:07 am

Re: So how good will Mailloux be?
Clearly Monty oversold Mailloux when he said he would’ve gone top-10 in the draft (and I’m pretty sure Monty was just regurgitating something Army said). Clearly, the Blues are high on Mailloux’s future. Army said as much. They continually look at prospects league-wide and consistently had Mailloux ranked highly - as a future top-4 d-man.
But all this video is, is a Canadians fan account reading other Canadians fan social media reactions/opinions.
My take is some Blues fans are likely overrating Mailloux…but I also think many Canadians fans are overrating Bolduc. One of the main things I continue to see them talk about is Bolduc’s physical presence. I call [nonsense] on that. He added some feistiness to his game but he’s not some physical beast all of a sudden. I give Bolduc credit for working on a weakness (he shied away from the physical game quite a bit in Jrs) but MTL fans are overrating their new acquisition too.
In the end, this was a trade for 2 solid 22 year olds who both project as solid secondary players. Not stars but legit NHLers. Bolduc is a bit more proven at the moment but Mailloux plays the much more premium position. As Army said, we’ll find out in time how well each team did in this trade.

Re: So how good will Mailloux be?
Tony Feltrin mentioned one time that "it's too bad that we don't get to see every prospect play in person before the draft". Evidently, they are limited by budget to only watch some prospects on tape.
Anybody know how limited the Blues research field is? Is it cost that limits how much they can travel to see the prospects?
Anybody know how the Blues compare to other teams relative to scouting practices and costs?

Will Borgen.
Re: So how good will Mailloux be?
I think the video is accurate. People have high hopes for Mailloux but it is not based on what he has done but what they hope he can develop into. The reason Habs leadership fell out of graces with him was he was a liability on defense and a major risk taker. That will be one of the first things Army needs to address. I suspect he will get some games early in the year to see how he progresses, but may share time when the games count.

Bolduc was 8th in scoring and #1 in +/- among all rookies. He is projected more than a role player.STL fan in MN wrote: ↑23 Aug 2025 11:11 am In the end, this was a trade for 2 solid 22 year olds who both project as solid secondary players. I said solid secondary player, not role player. A role player is a 4th liner or run of the mill 3rd liner. I see Bolduc above that but below a main core guy.rezero wrote: ↑23 Aug 2025 21:45 pmBolduc was 8th in scoring and #1 in +/- among all rookies. It will be quite interesting and informative to compare the Blues Bolduc with the Montreal Bolduc. It will tell us about a lot more than just Bolduc. If he improves (or declines) significantly, how much can be attributed to stronger line-mates, better coaching, more opportunity, etc.?STL fan in MN wrote: ↑23 Aug 2025 22:04 pmI said solid secondary player, not role player. Both are 22. One has 1 season under his belt and the other has 8 games. Of course both will improve significantly regardless of which team they play on.a smell of green grass wrote: ↑23 Aug 2025 22:16 pmIt will be quite interesting and informative to compare the Blues Bolduc with the Montreal Bolduc. Re: So how good will Mailloux be?
If Mailloux turns into a 3/4 guy he should meet our expectations.
Nobody thinks he's a 1st pairing guy....right? He's not going to match Bolducs production but he could exceed Bolducs importance on the team... eventually.

Re: So how good will Mailloux be?
My hope is that Bolduc turns into a 20 goal top 6 winger and Mailoux is a top 4 RHD. Both teams win.
If Bolduc ends up more a top 9 winger and Mailoux a top 6 d its probably still a fair trade.
My hope for him this year is that he gets a full year in the NHL.
I think when you look at the Blues (including Springfield) there is a pretty good chance we bring in another D with NHL experience. It's whether that player is a Calle Rosen type player who is likely a #8 type, or a Ryan Suter type who could play on the bottom pairing.
I am leaning toward the later as Tucker Mailoux and Kessell has a lot of question marks for your 5-7 d, so that could well impact Mailoux.

I'd lean the other way honestly.britishblue wrote: ↑24 Aug 2025 02:00 am My hope is that Bolduc turns into a 20 goal top 6 winger and Mailoux is a top 4 RHD. Both teams win.

Lost in all the offseason madness is the fact that Kessel is now waiver eligible AND a pending group 6 UFA(needs 10 games to maintain RFA status).
I don't think it's particularly likely that he gets claimed, but I do think there's a legit desire to keep him on as the #7 to maintain his RFA status. A Calle Rosen type that's a safe bet to get through waivers is a lot more appealing to me than somebody who's a legit threat to bump one of the 3 kids out of the way. I'm not ready to give up on any of them.

Re: So how good will Mailloux be?
I think if Mailloux turns into a solid top 6 D that you don’t question being in the lineup it’s still a decent trade. Brings much needed size with some edge to his game. However im sure the Blues are hoping hey landed a top 4 D. I don’t think this environment will be prime for him to develop. Parayko, Broberg, Fowler and Faulk to learn from and Montgomery to get the best out of him. As far as what has he done so far? Making 2 AHL all star games his first two AHL yeas is pretty significant and his coach said in the playoffs he was playing his best hockey. He even saw PK duty. I’m looking forward to see how he develops over the next 2-3 years.

Curious if you meant to say "I don't think this environment will be prime for him to develop"?Bluesfan1978 wrote: ↑24 Aug 2025 04:49 am I think if Mailloux turns into a solid top 6 D that you don’t question being in the lineup it’s still a decent trade. I think the Blues saw the tangibles were there, his availability was there as were a few issues that have held back his potential.
They will go to work on the intangibles and they clearly saw a big opportunity with this player so they took it.
