Blues, Habs, Dobson, Bolduc, Mailloux, Carbonneau

Post by zamadoo »

My initial question is, which overall outcome would I rather have? - Dobson+Bolduc or Mailloux+Carbonneau (and the price paid for each)

Then I was reminded that MTL acquired one of the 1sts that went to NYI from the Flames for taking Monohan - in exchange for future considerations? So, they netted the pick that helped them get Dobson and ended up being Victor Eklund in this past draft for taking on salary cap on an expiring contract. 8O

I don't think we could've beat the deal MTL gave NYI without making it lopsided - they simply had those two 1st rounders that we didn't. I think they wanted something now, not later.

However, let's say NYI would've taken Bolduc and our 1st (plus something like a future 2nd/3rd to match Heineman's value).

Would you rather have Dobson alone or Mailloux+Carbonneau?

Both of your questions leave the Blues on the come as to what I would prefer.

But I'd take Mialloux/Carb over Dobson alone right now.

Not sure about Dobson/Zach over Mailloux/Carb, that's a more difficult kind of cipher to consider......but even there the Blues could come out ahead on that as well.

Take note it took Dobson about three years to establish himself where he is and he's had an apparent significant fall off from 23-24 to 24-25.

I don’t know that Bolduc + 1st and 2nd get it done for Dobson. We know the Blues made an offer and Dobson wanted to stay in the east so I bet that offer was substantial. Kyrou would be my guess.

There's no way I go after Dobson. Kyrou+, or Bolduc+++, you're flushing assets down the toilet because the player has already told you, he's not signing long term with any team not in the East. If I misremember that, please let me know. Thats a HUGE gamble that you can bring him in, and change his mind. If you can't you end up having to flip him for much less. So you're watching the same movie again, and I hated the ending of The Kevin Shattenkirk Era. I can't see the remake ending any better.

Right. Blues probably pulled their offer when Dobson said he wanted to stay in the east.

What’s unknown is what it would’ve cost the Blues to get Dobson. And once he said he had no interest signing with a team in the West, it became a moot point.

In the big picture, Mailloux, KyrouSnuggerud/Neighbours over Dobson and Bolduc. Just haven't seen enough of Bolduc to proclaim anything over than good potential and I'm sure IF Dobson were to be dealt to the Blues Kyrou would have gone the other way, that's too much for me

Dobson is significantly better than Mailloux, and I would keep Carbonneau over Bolduc but not by as big a margin as Dobson over Mailloux. Bolduc is also a bit of a selfish player, he took multiple hideous penalties during the playoffs and hurt the team, nobody ever talks about it but it happened. At the end of the season before he was traded Armstrong mentioned that Bolduc could not make those mistakes in year 2, you get a one year grace window to make them.

He could not make the starting lineup with the Habs, and was very mistake prone. He is a longgg way from someone saying he is a mini Parayko. I am more concerned about what is between his ears and if he can learn to not take high risk chances.

Good points all around. I forgot about Dobson saying he would only sign on the coast.

So, while I was adamant about getting him, it was never really an option. That said, I'm still fine with the end result and Army's pivot.

I see a lot of people saying Mailloux couldn't crack the MTL lineup, but I'm not so sure that's completely true or as significant as has been insinuated. He was an AHL all-star who was working on rounding out his game. They took Reinbacher #5OA and are leaning on his development after injury has kept him out of games. No one says he can't crack the lineup, and they say he's the better prospect.

I'm more than welcoming more information, but the stats show that Mailloux played 21min in his debut in 23-24 and had an assist, a block, and a hit. He then had 2g/2a, 8 blocks, and 9 hits in 7 games last season, averaging 16min of ice time.

To me it sounds like he just needs to be given an opportunity, which is what we're doing. I look forward to adding some "snarl" to the d-core.

So DA traded a promising winger for a guy who can't crack the Montreal D line up.

Sorry...my money right now is on DA.

At the same age Parayko was not even in the NHL.

I agree. I think we're in a better position than we were last year, and Mailloux will grow into a top-4 D on this team, replacing Faulk when his contract expires. I'm ready to see him unleash that cannon of a shot. Hopefully he's a PP guy.
