Random idea: let’s sign Max Scherzer in 2026
1 yr/10mil deal.
He was injured this season, but through 11 starts has been really good.
Obviously the team will need some starter help. Might be fun to take a chance. Little risk.

$10 million is a fortune with the new outlook by ownership. Won't and shouldn't happen. You can't count on him to eat innings.
And he doesn't fit in what is now a rebuild.

10mil isnn't really a fortune. They spent that on Lynn and Gibson just a year ago.
Also, it does fit into the rebuild. MS won't cost prospects. isn't a big deal. Can help the young pitchers.
There's really no downside in it.

Yeah that is ownership's style these days. Sign a pitcher they had numerous times to sign in the past but were too cheap and then sign the guy past his prime on a regressing team. Definitely sounds like a MO/DeWitt move. I'm sure Scherzer would welcome the chance to work with the world famous and effective Dusty Blake.

$10 million will be a fortune now. We're in a new dynamic.

I think you may be assuming the 2025 non-spending tactic is forever. It's not. The team grabbed 3 starters in the 2023 offseason. Giving Max 10mil for one year isn't a thang.icon wrote: ↑23 Aug 2025 01:31 am$10 million will be a fortune now. We're in a new dynamic.

What could go wrong?

As pitching coach??

Most of us think they will not spend any money till the work stoppage in 2027 is over/settled.ecleme22 wrote: ↑23 Aug 2025 01:42 amI think you may be assuming the 2025 non-spending tactic is forever. Not a good fit and you have to have doubts. Why burden a young team with an old arm. This only makes sense if ownership was spending to win a championship next year and somehow he fit a missing piece.

Perhaps minimal downside to the Cards. What’s the incentive to Max to come here? I’m guessing he’d rather sign with a contender at this stage vs. playing for the hometown team that’s fringe competitive.
Now, if Bloom goes out and makes some strong other offseason moves first to signal we’re trying to win, that’s a different story. But I’m not holding my breath for that.

Why not get Nomo too while we’re at it? What’s Kirk Gibson up too?

IF they could find a sucker errrrrrrrrr GM that would take Gray, then I'd bring in Maxie @ $10M for one final season so he could finish his career back home.
He's massively better than the P O S Mikolas ($-17.67M off the books) and better than Gray.
He'd also be good for the young pitchers.

Well, yeah, Max would have to be okay w the team trajectory.WaltsSuccessor wrote: ↑23 Aug 2025 08:22 amPerhaps minimal downside to the Cards. What’s the incentive to Max to come here?
