Yeah, where are all the "Sign Bauer" people now, as the [ablution] gets lit up all year in Japan? He's been awful over there this year.Sweet Jones wrote: ↑21 Jul 2025 13:29 pmSide Note: Montero made a bit of news last week with his 'reported' 594 ft HR off or Trevor Bauer. It was a bomb for sure.BrummerStealsHome wrote: ↑21 Jul 2025 12:31 pm Been thinking about Gomber today as he pitches for the Rocks tonight against the Cardinals. I remember liking him quite a bit coming out of Memphis. Showed a lot of promise coming up in 2018. Anyone else remember the game at Cincy where he carried a no-hitter into the seventh when suddenly the fire alarms went off throughout Great American Ballpark. After they cleared the false alarm, Gomber lost his no-hitter and the lead, though the Carinals won in extras. A lot of folks believed the alarms were set off on purpose.
Anway, Gomber had a lost, injur plagued 2019 but still looked promising when he was the key piece of the Arenado trade. Funny, but he's the only one from the Cardinals side that is still playing. The others, Mateo Gil plays in the Mexican Leauge, Toney Locey is out of baseball, Elehuris Montero plays in Japan, and Jake Sommers has officially retired. Great trade for the Cardinals.

I haven't seen any mention here so I guess this is news--"the Rockies have placed scuffling starting pitcher Austin Gomber on outright waivers". He may well have pitched his last MLB game.

Will be a free agent in 5.5 weeks anyway.
Maybe he gets picked up by someone.

Re: Austin Gomber
He best pitch was his curve which is the wrong best pitch to have in Colorado.
Re: Austin Gomber
Eh. I like the trade and would still do itnagain but we didnt win anything from it and now instead have a negative value contract with arenado even with them paying part.BrummerStealsHome wrote: ↑21 Jul 2025 12:31 pm Been thinking about Gomber today as he pitches for the Rocks tonight against the Cardinals. So its not as great a steal as it initially looked as arenados kinda a burden now

Its very tough for pitchers to succeed in colorado and it goes beyond just the fact coors is hitter friendly. The problem with Coors is that the pitchers ball doesnt break the same as it does it other stadiums. That in turn can make it harder for the pitcher on the road as well cuz as they get used to coors, their pitch noa behaves and moves more than they are used to.
Basically it's just hard for a putcher to navigate their pitches behaving 1 way on half the games at home and another way in the ither half on the road and to settle in and get used to both is hard
Re: Austin Gomber
The trade was a complete steal. The Cards had all the pieces in place to win a WS in 2022 except another SP and two more BP pitchers. But, the team was too cheap to add those pieces and the opportunity slipped by. Your observation of what we are left with now is correct. But, the outcome could have and should have been better. The Dewitt's are suffering the fallout now with attendance drops as a result of their own stubborness.Wattage wrote: ↑21 Aug 2025 21:09 pmEh. Your point about 2022 is still true today.
I guess he does get in the way of getting payroll down to $100 million. Not sure they'd spend it elsewhere.
Re: Austin Gomber
I don't disagree, Arenado should not be a burden to the team as is. But, the Dewitt's have made it so. The MO, trading Arenado is priority 1, 2 and 3 this winter did not play well. I am a bit surprised Arenado did not go to Houston. That ballpark fits his swing better. He would have been able to put up better numbers there and have had a chance to win.renostl wrote: ↑21 Aug 2025 23:15 pmHe's still not a burden.ICCFIM2 wrote: ↑21 Aug 2025 22:47 pmThe trade was a complete steal. The issue is as I listen to the Dewitt's, the message appears to be that the first priority is to make a profit. So, as revenues decrease, payroll will decrease. They do not appear to be inclined to invest in the team payroll to create a winner unless the revenue is there. So while Arenado should not be a burden as is, he is based on the model the Dewitt's are running. Therefore, with Arenado on the team, they are unlikely to improve the team elsewhere purely based on his pay. That is tough to handle when Wetherholdt will likely be a better overall player than Arenado next year. Gorman is already a better hitter, albeit, his defense is not good..

Re: Austin Gomber
No thanks to picking up Gomber.
Thank goodness Mo is gone soon and we (hopefully) won't be picking up cr a pp y players anymore.

Re: Austin Gomber
When I think of Austin Gomber, I immediately think of the PH grand slam Albert hit off him in 2022. That's all.

The opening day roster to me says the FO
created burdens that didn't have to be. Catchers, DH, and 1B had multiples. 1 SS.
