2 pitches - 3 outs

Post by fullswing »

From Baseball Reference
Enyel De Los Santos - 8-16-25 Astros

“Pitch 1: With automatic runner Adley Rutschman on second base, the Orioles made an offensive substitution, inserting pinch-runner Luis Vázquez for Adley. De Los Santos faced Ryan Mountcastle. He delivered an 87 mph slider down in the zone. Mountcastle swung and lifted a fly ball to right field. One pitch, one out.

Pitch 2: Vázquez had advanced to third on the flyout, putting pressure on Enyel with one out and a runner 90 feet from scoring. Next up was Dylan Beavers. De Los Santos threw a changeup, which Beavers lined sharply to second baseman Ramón Urías. Urías snagged it then fired to third baseman Carlos Correa to double off Vázquez, who had strayed too far. Two pitches. Three outs. Inning over.”

First time in MLB history.

Interesting. Took me a second to understand that you meant only two pitches were thrown the entire inning. And that of course, is due to the ghost runner rule in extra innings now.

What's interesting as well, is that it is possible to do it in 1 pitch. IBB the first batter of the inning... 2 on, 0 outs, 0 pitches thrown. Then get a triple play on the first pitch.

Amazing. It really sounds like something this Cardinal offense would do.
