You don't have to rely on the draft

Post by zbasspro »

As the Brewers have clearly shown. Not drafting high during our great years is nothing more than an excuse. This is a fantastic article on how the Brewers are winning.

Sure makes me long for a time when we'd pick up a guy like Ludwig and he'd go on to mash for us.

All players get to professional ball thru the draft. So, yes, the draft position if critical. But the draft is not the problem, the problem is the Pirates, A's...etc draft a guy and spend 3 or 4 years developing him and the then the big market teams buy him with FA money.

I should have phrased it differently, saying "tanking" isn't necessary. There's players out there that are overlooked, and you need good coaching/instruction to hit on them.

The Cards used to do well in this regard...particularly with pitchers. Take a pitcher such as Loshe (excluding his injured years) and coach him up. We don't see much of that anymore, since they ran off many of the good Baseball men.

The Brewers get a high level compensation round pick every year due to being a revenue share receiver.

Of course they leverage the draft and every other thing they have in hand.

I think the Brewers have been a model organization the past decade or so. BUT...
They have never won a World Series, and are the oldest team of the 5 that haven't won, and that's a huge issue.
I don't see them winning it this year either, especially since Jacob Misiorowski could be coming off an injury by that time.

They don't need Misiorowski. They are the best team, pound for pound out there. I just wish that "just a bit outside" was here to watch it...better yet, call it.

They used their stars and prospects in trades so the draft and their pitching is mostly all draft and develop so the draft played a huge part

I hope you're wrong, and think you are. I have no problem at all rooting for them this year.
