A new L/R split

Post by jcgmoi »

I never heard of this happening before.

Athletics rookie Carlos Cortes entered the game yesterday against the Baltimore Orioles in the eighth inning as a defensive replacement in RF. Next inning, he shifted to third base.

Nothing really odd about that except that Cortes is a left-handed thrower in the outfield, yet switched to a right-handed thrower at third.

I checked and in the minors he played more than 1000 innings at second base, presumably as a RH thrower.

Im guessing hes ambidextrous like pat venditte?

I would think if he played some infield in his career that he would just go ahead and throw righthanded in the outfield to to simplify things unless his left hand is actually more powerful. Is there an advamtage to being lefthanded in rightfield? Id think its pretty minimal cuz you can angle your body while catching to get what throwing position you need.. does he play all outfield lefthanded?

Baseball reference says he plays LF, RF and 2B. Bats left, throws both. 5-7, 197 pounds.

ETA I guess he now also plays 3B.

Evidently the brewers seigler plays outfield lefthanded but catcher righthanded as well as 3b and 2b.

Thats even more surprising to me that he has enough arm strength to play catcher righty if hes a natural lefty

2 year old article about Seigler when he was in the minors. Also mentions Cortes who at the time was also in the minors.
