The issue with Roby is that...I cannot completely remember...is that there's no 60-day IL until either Spring Training or opening day. So he's gotta be on the 40 man (not IL) for at least the full off-season.Cusecards wrote: ↑10 Aug 2025 15:20 pmAgree!Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑10 Aug 2025 07:08 amLook at the 40 man roster. I think they also need to add, Bernal, Hjerpe, Blaze Jordan and Thompson when he comes off the 60 day IL as well. Since both Crooks and Church have to be added anyway this winter, it seems like they make the most sense to bring up this September. But, anyone that doesn't need to be added is unlikely to come up because they won't want to use the roster spot for that player, i.e. Wetherholdt. He will get added to the roster next spring when they can move one of Roby or Hjerpe back onto the 60 day IL.Talkin' Baseball wrote: ↑09 Aug 2025 20:58 pm I don't think the Cardinals 40 man roster is full (37?). They do have to add Crooks and Church this winter. They could call up Mathews, Wetherholt, Church, and Crooks while DFA'ing Mikolas and Hampson. They aren't letting Pages go at this time. What would you think of all that?
Since they have at least 6 players to add, 3 open spots and plus Mikolas takes care of 4 of them. So they need at least 2 more to get to 40 but really 4 more to create room. Sianni, Hampson and Koperniak are obvious ones to get 3 of the 4 open. There are several pitchers that could go. But, if they put Wetherholdt on now, it creates another spot they lose this winter. I don't think they will do that, no matter how much we all want to see Wetherholdt.
MM for certain with Roby going to the 60 day IL.
The others should be pretty obvious.

Still.....it will open up a slot at some point.
At any rate the Cards have some very marginal players.
And they pretty much face this decision every season!

Re: September call-ups
I personally believe the series of moves as a result of Oscar Tavares dying led to some signings that eventually crippled the free agent process. On top of the fact we have had a run of about 4 years where we have seen guys with what were supposed to be 5 tools and the ability to become supposed superstars that just never panned out. In that same time they watched traded guys go on to have success elsewhere. The development, recognition and coaching ability of the organization as a whole has really taken a step back. This is what I think they also saw by giving Bloom a year to really go through it and see what was there and what needed adjusting. On top of Moz understanding he has wore out his welcome as he over saw all of it, all this time. Now we have a lockout looming. I do not think we are going to see the team really change until after the lockout, at least with financial wranglings. Bloom will do some horse trading as they say, but business has to settle first.Hazelwood72 wrote: ↑10 Aug 2025 13:04 pmMike, you are exactly correct. This ballclub will remain dysfunctional, paralyzed, and mentally constipated until the end of this season when Mozo the Clown is finally and officially no longer POBO.StlMike1969 wrote: ↑09 Aug 2025 12:40 pmThis. They are not going to do anything other than roll with what they have until the Bloom conference announcing full control. Afterwards, we will have to see how the off season plays out. With the lockout looming I think teams are going to be very frugal and conservative on what they ahve and what they let go. The new guys will just have to wait until ST to get a look see.HorseTrader wrote: ↑09 Aug 2025 12:27 pm They will have to keep some 40 man slots open for players who they need to protect from the Rule 5 draft. I don't believe any of the players you named are on the 40 man roster. So I doubt any of them will come up in Sept UNLESS they are among those who will need to be Rule 5 protected this year
I still can’t understand why BDW Jr. has allowed Mozo to continue to destroy this once-proud organization.

It sure needs some clutter cleared out. Too many DH types, too many being asked to play out of position (Gorman, Walker, Willie.....)rockondlouie wrote: ↑10 Aug 2025 13:07 pm(JMO) but I think we're going to see a semi house cleaning by C. I think they move on from the useless Pages (.210 .255 .330 .585) who's also overrated defensively and in calling a game.
Crooks/Pozo should be catchers in 2026, holding down the fort until Bernal is ready.
Plenty of players on today's roster will be gone as he culls out those he doesn't want while making room for those he brings in from the minor league system, via trades and free agency.
This faulty roster needs a complete makeover.

Too many LHH. Too many middle infielders. Too many catchers. Convert some of this into viable starting pitchers.HorseTrader wrote: ↑11 Aug 2025 07:30 amIt sure needs some clutter cleared out. Two major league starting pitchers would be huge for this team next year. Three would be even better. (I don't want to count on Pallante)

Bernie recently did a podcast and mocked "the 40-man roster issue" as a red herring. I was glad, as every time I see it raised, there are numerous players that aren't part of the future plan on that roster. It's another "the sun was in my eyes."
I'd bet the majority of the players I listed will be long gone once C. Bloom takes over.![]()

Bloom will reshape it, hopefully get it right.
