No, he really isn't on offense. He does not pose that big of a threat in the lineup to make everyone around him better. Those kinds of hitters are foundational players. And he isn't one.

I often compare him to Ben Zobrist of yesteryear. And he may not even be that good.
AND Ben Zobrist was one of the major reasons the KC Royals and cubs won World Championships in 2015 and 2016.
Exactly. The glue players. You need them because your entire lineup is not super stars. If your glue players are really good at their roles AND you have a couple of great players in the middle... you have a good team. We have no one in the middle....
What players of the 2015 KC Royals would you consider to be "super stars" at that time?
Actually, a good point. I looked at the stats for that team. Sal Perez was only 25, knocked in 73 runs and put up 2.3 WAR. Moustakis and Hosmer had WAR over 4, and Lorenzo Cain (remember him?) put up 6.9 WAR. Not that WAR is the end all be all, but for economy of typing... Morales had a good year at DH and knocked in 106 runs. So they had a few guys who put up career numbers all at once, and Sal Perez coming along. Hosmer was a decent hitter in his prime. Cain was a premier CFer for a short stint. It all came together for them in the one season...

Actually, I just looked up Ben Zobrist. He had some years that Donovan could only dream of. So he's not on that level.

Admittedly, he's a good player, but when he's your best player, that's a problem.
This - I like Donovan but please, he’ll never be a Zobrist.

Zobrist in his first 448 games in the show: .253/.346/.421/.767
Donovan in his first 481 games in the show: .280/.349/.402/.751

If he is the Cardinals' best player right now, and they trade him for weak return, it would be a colossal fail.

The problem is that the Cardinals are trying to promote Donovan, Nootbaar, Burleson, and Contreras as players to build around, and they aren’t. They are very good complementary players that every team needs, but those teams also have superstars that can carry teams. The Cardinals don’t have one of those.
