I watched the game.craviduce wrote: ↑07 Aug 2025 20:17 pm Fastball was controlled, Change was thrown straight and as a bottom dropper. The Curve and Slider were swing and misses at opportune times.
He was filthy all night.
I still think he could do with a clean up on his shoulder...but if he's doing this 2 games in a row with no set backs? He may avoid the procedure.
Good to see from our #2 prospect...he's labored ALL season
Largely agree.
He has a 15-18 MPH gap between the FB and his off-speed offerings.
Messed with hitter timing for sure.
The change up was excellent, and the slider had just enough movement to miss bats.
All that said, his FB was 91-93 and straight.
He got some misses over the plate on that pitch - and MLB hitters would not miss them.
He will need to spot it better at the next level.
On balance - very good performance and showed promise.

It’s exciting to see him with control and offspeed magic, but, without the velocity, he.isn’t 2024; is he?craviduce wrote: ↑07 Aug 2025 20:17 pm Fastball was controlled, Change was thrown straight and as a bottom dropper. The Curve and Slider were swing and misses at opportune times.

JJ? Weather hot?
(See what I did there?)
Just a day off.

Great to see for Mathews! Hope the velo continues to get back. A few more starts like the last 2 and we could see him in St. Louis.

I have heard that Matthews arm isn't totally healthy from some posters. Is this true? He looked healthy last night.

Re: Quinn Mathews was 2024 Mathews tonight
I know this has been potentially health related with Mathews but the way he has struggled reminded me of Shelby Miller his year at AAA. Seemed like a pitcher in a similar spot, we all wanted him to get to St Louis quick but he got to Memphis and struggled all that year until a few good starts at the end. So hopefully that's what we're in line for with Mathews.
There is a serious, anxiety-inducing contrast between the positive things about Mathews that led him to be ranked so highly and the injury/wildness concerns that have led him to get taken off the list.

They said on thr broadcast last night that his velo had been doen recently, but it was a concerted effort to gain more control. Didn't sound like an injury to me. Although many on here have attributed his velo drop to injury.redbirdfan51 wrote: ↑08 Aug 2025 08:46 am I have heard that Matthews arm isn't totally healthy from some posters. Is this true? The few innings I watched he was impressive. I shocked at the small crowd.craviduce wrote: ↑07 Aug 2025 20:17 pm Fastball was controlled, Change was thrown straight and as a bottom dropper. The Curve and Slider were swing and misses at opportune times.

Memphis has been doing about 1K in attendance this week, typical early August crowd? I'm not sure about that. They said they expect a lot more this weekend.OldRed wrote: ↑08 Aug 2025 09:06 amThe few innings I watched he was impressive.
