Winn's scamper from 1st to 3rd shows how speed can score added runs

Post by ramfandan »

Remember when Cardinals had runners on 1s & 3rd (Winn on 1st ) and base hit to LF .. though the ball was hit to the LF , Winn felt he could beat the throw to 3rd . LF attempts to nail Wind on a close play at 3rd .. Winn safe .. trail runner for Cards running to 2nd .. young LAD 3rd baseman makes mental error of throwing the ball to 2nd (rather than accepting 2nd & 3rd ) . The throw is wild and Winn scores from 3rd for the 5th run of the game.

Now set up that same scenario if Burly or Pages would have been the runner at 1st instead of Winn. On the base hit to LF, neither would have attempted to run to 3rd base and just pulled up at 2nd . Thus no throw from LF to 3rd base and subsequently no errant throw to allow the runner to score.
That is an example of what fast players on a team can do for your offense . Take the extra base and sometimes force defensive miscues by the defense in doing so . Certainly something the Brewers do with their great team speed .
Hoping Bloom sees that Cardinals for 2026 and beyond need to feature a must faster team . Not only does a slower team show up in fewer stolen bases but also in taking the extra bases and scoring some added runs here and there when you force the opposing defense to throw the ball around the diamond more.

And bring back the AstroTurf!!!

Concrete infield. 30 foot walls along foul lines. Play the ball off the wall as long as remains in field of play.

With 8 Ozzie Smiths and 5 Chris Carps and a Sutter.

That's a Winner.

Yes, I agree, speed is a great asset that rarely slumps..Stay away from the Tarp Machine and floozies and ya should be good.

+1 I think TLR called it "controlled aggression". Catching the other team on their heals. Its fun to play and to watch. Hate playing against those teams.

Winn needs to add to his game and learn how to steal bases.

In every level of sports, speed is maybe the most consistant part of the game.

Go find and watch the MLB show on Billy Martin. Every time he took over a new team he would insist they learn to bunt, squeeze, hit behind runners, take the extra base, steal if capable. His new teams generally lacked the talent of better teams but drove them crazy and had success.
I would insist that EVERY player know how to lay down a sacrifice bunt if only for moving over the ghost runner over in home games where the opponent didn’t score in the top half.
Think of how absurd it is that Scott with all that can’t bunt. That shows just how bad the organization has become in developing players.
