suzybuck wrote: 06 Aug 2025 10:55 am Mikolas has a career win/loss record of 64-64 over 9 seasons, an average of 7.1 wins per season. He's made a pretty good income for that kind of production.
He's in his 10th mlb season and is currently 70-73 overall, 3 teams. He is 66-67 (4.15 era) with us. So yeah, 7 wins a season and making big bucks. He DOES pitch a lot of innings, unfortunately a lot of those innings are not good.
This will make everyone puke:

Career Earnings
$114,257,656

Prime example #1 how Mo has wasted so much of the payroll BDWJr has given him.

I don't remember anyone wanting to DFA him...
I'm glad he got 200 wins on a last place team.

It's almost as if it's two completely different situations, with two completely different circumstances
Actually happy he got 200 wins, but the situation is completely the same. The organization was already in a don’t care about winning atmosphere. They are no longer a major league organization, except for price.

There is nothing the same about Adam Wainwright, legend, Cardinal HOF and WS hero. On a last place team (2023) with nothing to play for, it made sense both (1) Not to DFA him. He didn't deserve that embarrassment on a team with nothing to play for. (2) A chance at 200 wins

Mikolas is none of that, accomplished nothing and the Cardinals at .500 technically still have something to play for.

The uniform they wear is the only similarity

You’ll see him five days from now.
Here's what you got from those 4 starts:

6.00 ERA
6.83 FiP

No need for an "innings eating" batting practice pitcher on a going nowhere .500 team BDog.

These starts need to be going to young pitchers allowing them to 1) get major league experience and 2) be evaluated by C. Bloom.
I agree. They should give his starts to Leahy. Build him up. If he can give 3-4 innings that would be fine. If Leahy has a bad start and they are behind, bring in Mikolas to eat the rest of the game. If they are 4 good innings, the team has a chance and it won't burn up the bullpen anymore than a Mikolas start...

That's a great thought!

Let Leahy throw those 3-4-5 innings....see what he can do........and Bloom can use that info as prep for 2026.

1) It was a mistake to start Waino.
2) Waino has helped this team to win a WS, nearly win another, make countless playoff appearances

Mikolas hasn't done sh*t except leverage two good seasons into 10s of millions and a mediocre record.

Two nonconsecutive good seasons, mind you. They were four years apart. Which makes the extension even dumber.

And both times Mo rushed to extend him when he had one year left on his deals. ::crazya::

Season was already pretty underwater once Adam even made his first start.

Also, Adam was a legend on the team. Closed out a world series win, and pitched a heck of a lot of good seasons prior to. AND the season before, he was definitely above average.

Mikolas has done nothing here of note. He's essentially Kent Bottenfield except he never went away.

As for who to start? Well, I get not wanting to fudge around with arb clocks, but how about Wilkerson in AAA? Or that other guy they signed out of the Mexican leagues. I don't expect much, but they can't be worse. I've also been hearing a little scuttlebutt on Leahy starting, possibly. I mean, heck, if we're only going to get three innings out of this spot, why not make it three innings of likely decent pitching?
Agree with most except “Mikolas has done nothing here of note”.

He said he would like to tell the fans to eat [shirt].

That was noteworthy and not in a good way!
One other thing of note. His first season here he pitched 200 innings with a sub 3 era and an 18-4 record. Yeah, I know an 18-4 record apparently doesn't mean anything anymore, but still. The rest of his tenure has been rather pedestrian. And the eat shirt thing didn't age well, did it?
He had a great 1st year back from Japan.

So despite being under contract for the following season Mozeliak gave him a 3-year extension.

Obviously Mikolas is not in the same camp as Wainwright.

Wainwright hadn’t already been one of the worst pitchers in baseball the previous 2 years prior to that last year, unlike Mikolas.

Mikolas over his last 89 starts: 25-33 5.06 ERA 484 IP 542 H 73 HR
Sounds like a good time to buy low and extend him!

I can kind of understand the first extension. But that second one is a doozy.

I’m not in favor of any scheme that turns our bullpen into a meat grinder. Either bring up or sign a true stretched out starter and plug them into the rotation, or finish the season with MM.

Clearly he is no longer qualified to start, but...

Do we have a qualified person to start in his place?

If this management doesn’t care that Miles is starting why should us fans? You get to a point where it becomes futile to attempt to understand the idiocy…..throw up hands and say WHATEVER. Winning obviously isn’t a goal. When the POBO says “They extended their Manager so he didn’t have any pressure to win”…..believe him
