Red Sox sign Anthony 8 yrs/ $130M
Deal includes club option thru 2034
.283 avg in first 46 games
Entered 2925 as #2 MLB prospect
Wondering if Bloom would ever consider a long term deal for JJ Wetherholt and/or Masyn Winn
Brewers did for Jackson Chourio

Re: Red Sox sign Anthony 8 yrs/ $130M
It's possible but I prefer waiting until at least sometime in his third season if he's the star we all hope he will be.
I remember too many in CT clamoring to give both Walker & Winn $100+M deals, glad that didn't happen.

I know teams are starting to lock guys up early but 900 years early seems a little excessive
Re: Red Sox sign Anthony 8 yrs/ $130M
It's a roll of the dice .. For a team in a lower salary type market , it could be a great move for Milw. as by 2030 , the salary for this kid could be thru the roof and they have him locked in .rockondlouie wrote: ↑06 Aug 2025 12:39 pm It's possible but I prefer waiting until at least sometime in his third season if he's the star we all hope he will be.

For Chourio, he is getting a lot of $$ upfront and guaranteed $82 M at the minimum.
This was the Chourio deal :
Jackson Chourio signed an eight-year, $82 million contract with the Milwaukee Brewers before playing a major league game. The contract includes two $25 million club options for the 2031 and 2032 seasons, with $2 million buyouts, potentially extending the deal to ten years and $142.5 million. This is the largest contract ever given to a player before their MLB debut.
So the Brewers could have him locked in for 10 years . THey could also buy out for $2M at that time too.

No way I give any player that kind of money until they're in their third year and have proven themselves.
Even Albert didn't get his $100M extension until after his 3rd season, and all he did during those 3 yrs was:
114 HR
381 RBI
.334 .412 .613 1.025
Now that's the kind of guy you rush to extend for as long as you can afford, not JJ or Winn or Walker or Chourio.
Of course, JMO
Re: Red Sox sign Anthony 8 yrs/ $130M
The salaries of top players in the $40 /$ 50 M area right now is making teams think what the top guys may be getting in 2030 /2031 .
Brewers thinking no way we could afford a Chourio after his 6 th year if he could get that on the open market . So they are willing to pay more bucks earlier to him in order to guarantee they have him past his 6th year (free agency ).
They are banking he is a big star type player. So far so good for them .
He just turned 21 years old in March. In 2025 , he is .276 BA with 17 HRs & 67 RBI . He has 29 doubles, 4 triples, and 18 SB.
Currently out with hamstring .

'No way I give any player that kind of money until they're in their third year and have proven themselves. does have one glitch to it though.
The team would never get the guy for that 8 year total for those $$$ after his 3rd year . The monies would be far greater after year 3 .big time !
The agent took the Brewer offer for he knows the player gets guaranteed good dollars. It's a gamble for both sides. If the kid becomes a Juan Soto type , the agent will be kicking his own (donkey) for signing him for those $$ so early . He would be shortchanging the kid big dollars when he is finished wtith his 6th year. On the Brewers end, they could be kicking themselves if he doesn't become a big star as they overpaid for the 8 years but if he is a big time player they come out smelling like a rose. So gambles for both team and player agent . The Brewers are banking Chourio is a perennial All Star caliber player.

Kyle Hendricks will still be able to shut us down in that year.
Re: Red Sox sign Anthony 8 yrs/ $130M
I don't get trying to lump Walker and Winn together. Winn now leads the team in + bWAR for position players while Walker is at the opposite end of the scale with bWAR.rockondlouie wrote: ↑06 Aug 2025 12:39 pm It's possible but I prefer waiting until at least sometime in his third season if he's the star we all hope he will be.

Re: Red Sox sign Anthony 8 yrs/ $130M
I would certainly hope they'd consider locking up Winn and Wetherholt.
Winn leads the team in fWAR and I'm guessing he'll come a little cheaper since he doesn't put up big offensive numbers, and that's what's going to get you a big contract. I think you could possibly get them on our pretty affordable long-term deal.
I try to do the same thing with JJ, even as soon as this offseason, if they really think he's the guy that he looks like he is. I don't think you're going to get a deal for him, though. He just seems like the kind of guy that is confident and his ability and he'll make you pay to keep him. But if it's a similar contract to Roman Anthony with escalators and whatnot, and JJ is playing like he's capable, then it's still going to be worth it.
