Oquendo Revisited
At the time the Cardinals passed on hiring Oquendo instead hiring Matheny, many came on here saying it was extremely telling that the did not trust Oquendo to run the team.
We have witnessed through the Matheny era, Schildt and what many of us know as a bad firing based on his pushing back on management and Marmol they want puppet managers they can control.
Was Oquendo not getting the job really about a lack of trust, or did they feel he was too close to LaRussa and would want more say and not be a puppet of the front office?

At some point, Stubby Clapp probably deserved a chance to manage the Cardinals. He did a tremendous managerial job for the organization at AAA Memphis.Stlcardsblues wrote: ↑02 Aug 2025 10:52 am At the time the Cardinals passed on hiring Oquendo instead hiring Matheny, many came on here saying it was extremely telling that the did not trust Oquendo to run the team.

Re: Oquendo Revisited
I wanted Francona first then Jose. Francona goes without explanation but Jose already had the familiarity and respect of the clubhouse. And was a TLR disciple.
My only reservation with Oquendo in what is now hindsight is that he never got a managing job after. Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe he interviewed with the Marlins at one point but was otherwise overlooked year after year. Which makes you wonder why.
That said I still believe he was an extremely ideal fit for the Cardinals at the time

Re: Oquendo Revisited
AGAIN, Francona was a physical, mental and emotional wreck following the 2011 season in Boston. He showed up to the interview looking like death warmed over. NO ONE hired him in 2012. No one hired Oquendo, either.
Re: Oquendo Revisited
The secret weapon didn't have a chance with MO in charge.
Loved hearing an interview with Winn about his time with Oquendo in FLA. He was talking how awesome the experience was as if we didnt know who Jose was. I think Bloom is smart enough to realize it and make a bold move.
The feeble spineless gutless era of MO is over.

Re: Oquendo Revisited
Bringing Oquendo in as the manager. Relink to fundamental basement with a group of young players.
Re: Oquendo Revisited
I have always felt like Clapp either wasn't offered the job or refused because he was not a lapdog for management either. He doesn't seem like anyone's (buzz) boy.Shady wrote: ↑02 Aug 2025 11:26 amAt some point, Stubby Clapp probably deserved a chance to manage the Cardinals. Re: Oquendo Revisited
Remember:
Joe Strauss, on the record with Management and Mo'ron, wrote how the next Manager after Larussa was going to be on the cheap, and one that Mo could control.
Ownership stated, you dont have to pay a manager 6 million to win or make a run at world series.
Ownership would of been crushed by Joe, if he was still alive, he pulled no punches, and would called the last 3-5 years out for exactly what it was. now we have nothing but shills writing for the sports teams. goold is the lap dog for bdw2 and 3

Like Oquendo, Clapp has never been hired by anyone else either. Schumaker, Shildt and Matheny have been.jw0595 wrote: ↑02 Aug 2025 13:45 pmI have always felt like Clapp either wasn't offered the job or refused because he was not a lapdog for management either. Re: Oquendo Revisited
Jose did not have the media skills required of position
Re: Oquendo Revisited
Nice try and sanitized too. The Cardinals gave Oquendo the Dave Ricketts, St Louis treatment. Play to the crowd, the mirror, or whatever but he stood no chance. Ollie Marmol got the job as a result in an attempt quell the previously mentioned but with a caveat: Strip the team and be left with little substance and make it work. After being exposed for such, the revelation was a horrifying exposure of how far behind they actually were and remainBaseball Savant wrote: ↑02 Aug 2025 14:38 pm Jose did not have the media skills required of position
Re: Oquendo Revisited
I’m guessing that Oquendo has a strong POV about the way things should be done. Remember the reason Shildt was fired? I can see JO being like that, especially after a long tenure with strong willed TLR.
You think it’s a coincidence Matheny, Franklin, Flores, etc all had like their first real post-playing career baseball jobs under Mo? They are green, loyal and don’t push back. The qualities Mo loves.
