They should have got more for Maton

Post by hmoss859 »

Reading between lines on reporting, sounds like they tried to milk a better offer from other teams, and it all fell thru, thus the last minute desperation trade with Rangers

Very disappointing poker play by Mo

Maton will help Rangers

You take the deal you're offered or you don't make a deal.

So other teams did not bite on a higher price the Cards wanted for Maton . So they get blamed for last minute desperation trade so what would you have done ? Not traded Maton at all and get absolutely nothing for him as his contract expires .
You do know the saying 'something is better than nothing'

When your title stated They should have gotten more for Maton did you ever think that maybe you overvalued Maton's worth on the trade market. You have no idea what the Cardinals asking price for Maton was .. obviously Mo thought it was higher than other teams were willing to shell out. It's lie a guy who owns a house and says 'My house to me is worth $300,000 doesn't get any buyers to pay $300,000 . The owner wants to retire elsewhere so he ends up selling it for $265,000 . Then all his family says Oh you should have gotten more for your place , Dad . Why did you sell it for so much less ?

Most pundits liked the trade for the Cardinals.

This post makes no sense. You can't force other teams to give you what you think is fair value.

You don't know how other teams valued Maton.

The Cardinals got what they can get.

IMO it stands to reason that if Mo had traded Maton earlier (either yesterday morning or the night before) he could have gotten more, since a lot of potential Maton buyers filled their RHP needs by the end of the deadline.

Maton was a top-10 reliever on the market, his return shouldn't have been much less than Helsley.

It's not like Mo doesn't have a history of waiting too long to deal an asset. This was just that on a micro-scale.

The Cardinals got what they can get.
In his first year of pro ball this season Mason Molina has given up 55 hits in 74 innings and struck out 93 across 2 levels. 7th round pick out of U. of Arkansas.

Skyler Hales has made it all the way to AAA this season, his second season as a pro. 4th round draft pick out of Santa Clara.

Pretty good haul for a 2+ month rental.

Maton was NEVER going to bring back any teams top tier prospects in a solo trade, they got the best the could for him.

Had they paired him w/Donny or Bumbles even Noot, then they would've got some real value.

I saw a 15 second video of Hales throwing and the way he slings his elbow it looks like his arm's gonna snap off at pretty much any moment.

His delivery is awful, he's a TJ ticking time bomb, and I'll be shocked if he ever makes it more than a few years in the bigs. Based on 15 seconds of course

We should have got more for a 2-month rental who was available up to the last week of spring training? Come on man! Be better!

We got what the market commanded for Maton. He served us well and now gets to compete in a playoff race. I'd like to resign him in the offseason.

So the "sky" in Skylar is for how far through the air the balls travel apparently

But seriously his AA numbers are pretty good, aside from the ERA. Drilling down into the game logs it looks like he had a really bad week toward the beginning of the season but then was pretty great, except for one June game vs. Springfield of all teams where they hammered him.

But even with that Springfield game, after the first 2 weeks of the season he had a 3.43 ERA in AA. If his arm stays attached he may be able to help in the STL BP as soon as next year.

Once Helsley and Matz were dealt(which made sense) I was kind of hoping they’d have kept Maton and Romero.
Both making peanuts($2+M) and seemed to be good arms to extend.
Of course there are usually a number of veteran relief arms available in the offseason.
That is how they picked up Maton and others to begin with.
Hell....maybe they’ll resign him as a FA??

They could even bring back both of them if they really wanted to. Doubt they will though (and not in a bad way).
