Facing Jimmy Snuggerud's shot? 'It's like a 90 mile an hour curveball'

Matthew DeFranks
July 27, 2025

So … what is it like to face Snuggerud’s shot?

“It’s not flat,” Bartoszkiewicz said. “It’s like a 90 mile an hour curveball. The way Ovi (Alex Ovechkin) shoots, it’s kind of like a knuckle puck, but it’s still 100 miles an hour. Snuggy’s pretty similar. There’s clips of him on Minnesota doing a 360 spin-o-rama out of a one-timer because he’s swinging so hard. The puck’s just flying at you. You don’t really know where it’s going. It’s hard to pick up. With his shot, his speed, his hands, it’s hard to read, it’s hard to see.”

“It is really hard,” Bartoszkiewicz said. “You see guys in MLB swing, and they miss curveballs all the time, or sliders. It’s just another element that makes it much harder to stop. Snuggy’s pretty much there. It’s not a clean shot that’s flat coming straight at you. Those are pretty easy to pick up. His is a really good shot. His one-timer is amazing.”

Sounds like someone whom is best aligned with your best passing & setup Center man. Can't really teach that gifted-at-birth skill and it likely is close to fully developed at this point. Let's go!

I love that he had the poise to stay in school when the Blues wanted him to come out because the way he played it out has been pretty sweet. He did not have it all polished after his D+2 and had he come out we would have seen more issues which would have detracted confidence. Confidence is the #1 thing these kids need to adjust to the speed of the NHL and he gave it to himself and is on a glide path to spending his rookie year taking feeds from Thomas. Thomas-Snuggy is the #1 thing I am excited to see on the main roster.

Needs to stick up for himself. That will help his confidence too. Same with Broberg (which I expect him to start doing this year).

Also I just hate Snuggy. It’s just so lame. It’s my own bias and I realize that, but it’s just awful to me. Makes me think of Snuggle the Downy bear

Correct, he's snuggly! Snuggy Bear also works, but The Midnight Snuggler is one someone proposed once that is my favorite. This one you just have to go with ...

Don’t want to put too much pressure on the kid but he probably has the best shot on the team. Or at least has the potential to. It’s a heck of a shot. He just needs to prove it in the NHL now. And if he sticks on a line with Thomas, he’s going to get plenty of opportunities this season.

Snuggerud himself even refers to himself as Snuggy. The Gophers would announce his goals as “Snuggy snipes”. The nickname is a little silly but that’s like…his name. Those that hate it can either get on board with it or I guess complain about it for the next 10-15 years…

see my basis is, you know you feel all warm and snuggly when you have an elite defenseman taking care of your defense corps? it's like that, but instead with this kid's shot. the shot is one that, as a Blues fan, when I see it, I personally do feel all warm and snuggly

I hate it. I’ll never like it, but it is what it is. As long as he sticks up for himself… he can call himself snuggalicious

you are missing a glorious opportunity to go the other direction and enjoy it deliciously while others get flustered about it IMO. it's pure fun. playfulness. sports should have that.

RT is a great set up man. However, I hope he doesn't pass up prime scoring opportunities (which he used to do) due to being so pass conscious. Ideally RT will get his 25-ish goals while racking up more assists because of JS' shooting ability.

As long as the team is successful, jimmy has everything he needs for a calder run.

I’ll try my best … and I’m not too flustered about it. Just think it’s silly. I’d have so much fun chirping him in the playoffs.

it's more likely to go the other way. Blues trail by one and he rifles a sexy one to tie it. Then the silly fun is there for you, right where you want to meet it

Nope my goal is a place of acceptance. If I start to partake then I will feel incongruent and vulnerable. I’ll bring this up with my psychologist. Exposure therapy would be best in this situation…so you’ve already helped
