Which bats would you trade?
If we go that route, Burleson makes the most sense. He’s had a productive year and controllable through 2029. Not crazy about trading him but would bring back a good pitcher in return especially if you include one of the rental relievers in the deal.
Noot is hurt. Gorman and Walker keep showing just enough not to give up on them yet. Donovan, Winn and Herrera look like guys to build around.

Very difficult to trade junk for gold.

That one

I don’t expect major stuff at the deadline and that is ok with me.
Offseason will be more telling.
Most of the players available will be rentals or salary dumps. Not what is needed.
If they can move on from the pending FA’s and get some solid returns as they did in 2023 I’d be happy.
Of course finally moving Arenado would probably be a plus.
A simple move of a LH bat(Nootbaar?) for a RH bat(?) could also pay off?

The other benefit to trading position players here at the deadline is to relieve the log gam. If and when Noot and Gorman return to health, too many players to get PT. Not to mention getting Wetherholdt a look. Mozeliak emphasized “runway” for Gorman and Walker. Don’t have that with Arenado, Noot, Burly on the roster… when healthy.

Weaver and Kelly were the highlights for the AZ trade. COL went for quantity over quality
common denominator.. both teams didn't wanna pay their stars

True. Goldschmidt to the Cardinals, Carson Kelly, Luke Weaver, Andrew Young and a round B pick to Arizona and they paid part of the salary. Arenado to the Cardinals for 4 minor leaguers to the Rockies and they paid a huge amount of Arenado's salary to dump him and the remainder of his salary.moose-and-squirrel wrote: ↑26 Jul 2025 12:19 pmWeaver and Kelly were the highlights for the AZ trade. Cardinals will need to draft/develop their starting pitching.
They don't have the hitter surplus that allows them to deal anyone of value for pitching, they need the few offensive bats (WillyC, Hererra, Burly and soon JJW) they have.
And they certainly, under BDWJr, will NEVER be in the bidding for top free agent starters.
Draft/Develop under C. Bloom will be the ticket.

And that was in a competitive trade marketplace with other teams trying to get them.OldRed wrote: ↑26 Jul 2025 12:27 pmTrue.
