Yea, I think you have to wait on dealing Donovan to a team that is willing to trade a young, MLB ready starting pitcher who can contribute right now and you are going to be able to hang onto for awhile.
I'm not against dealing him at all, and maybe that has to wait until the offseason, but I don't give him up for cheap.

Maybe not ML ready but near ready, multiple, with at least one high ceiling prospect in the deal.Ronnie Dobbs wrote: ↑25 Jul 2025 14:33 pmYea, I think you have to wait on dealing Donovan to a team that is willing to trade a young, MLB ready starting pitcher who can contribute right now and you are going to be able to hang onto for awhile.

So you want to send our best player whom is in the prime of his career away. Great way to build for the future!

Probably the only guy I'd not trade. Now, if they made and offer we couldn't refuse I'd listen, but we've been snookered too many times lately. I don't trust Cards to evaluate talent, especially unproven talent.stlbirdlover wrote: ↑25 Jul 2025 16:17 pm So you want to send our best player whom is in the prime of his career away. I don’t think it’s ever a good idea to trade a quality everyday player, which you have control for multiple years, for a pitcher. The risk of injury is way too high. The solution is focus on acquiring and developing young prospects. The time to gamble is in your draft choices or acquisition of unproven prospects with potential.Ronnie Dobbs wrote: ↑25 Jul 2025 14:33 pmYea, I think you have to wait on dealing Donovan to a team that is willing to trade a young, MLB ready starting pitcher who can contribute right now and you are going to be able to hang onto for awhile.

They want Donovan - they can send Hunter Brown and Cam Smith to St. Louis. We'll send them Jordan Walker and Donny.

No way we trade Donovan.
The fans are already unhappy and not showing up,
Trading their best player (all star) would be complete treason to the fan base!

Looks like a trade the Pirates make every time they get talent. Load up those minor leagues baby! Can never have enough 19 year old pitchers. Take advantage of 50 cent hot dog night in Springfield!

And yet, we are watching probably his ceiling as a player unfold now. And he is under control thru 2027 which is when earliest this team will challenge for a playoff run. And he will be 31 then. He is not a player that is going to be on this team next time they are relevant. And this is probably peak Donovan.stlbirdlover wrote: ↑25 Jul 2025 16:17 pm So you want to send our best player whom is in the prime of his career away. Great way to build for the future!
So yes, I get it fans won't like it but this kind of trade is why TB and MIL remain relevant with even less financial resources than the Cards.
Do I like Donnie? Sure. Really good player. But I'd rather watch the start of a Cards run of playoff seasons with relevance. And he could return talent to do that if they guess right on which prospects will blossom. And no I do not think anyone can guarantee which prospects emerge from minor league numbers so it is a (bleep) shoot. Which is why they need to do multiple deals packing the farm with 20 high ceiling talents to get lucky on 3-4 of them at the same time THEN supplement spending back to the $180 mil or higher range to be a contender.
Whatever. People disagree. But I'm happier watching a 70 win season this year and next if it means 2027 emerges as a real exciting talented team under control.
