Anyone weak minded to that extreme wouldn’t be in mlb
This is the idiotic answer I was waiting for. Players aren't robots. Also they have no idea where they might go. A lot of people like comfort and also as a human being it's not comfortable not knowing where you might be going and having to leave friends and family. You hear it brought up literally all the time how distracting trade rumors are for players.
The deadline creates a pecking grounds for the top ten teams. Teams like the Cards have around ten players, that could move. Probably not, but up to ten ish.
To play this game at its demanded best requires as much game face as possible. Hearing or seeing your name must create some anxiety, just enough to put you mentally not MLB ready for a game or series:

And yet Suarez is hitting the cover off the ball amid all the rumors. There is talent.
Cards have been streaky and at times (bleep) all year. To say “oh deadline rumors” is looking for a mystification of reality. They aren’t good.
I think that the team has some decent untapped “physical” talent.
But....they do seem “mentally” fragile which is holding them back.
They play good defense which is more of a physical attribute.
But their baserunning and plate discipline is poor which is more “mental” than physical.
The Cards historically have been good at fundamentals but that has certainly declined in the last decade.
Not being on the “inside” I don’t know where to start with fixing that?
Bloom has a reputation for being strong in building farm systems. They certainly need that!
Now as for “development” that would seem to point to coaching at every level?
I only see the coaching at the mlb level.
Personally I think they can do much better than Oli, Pop, etc
Time will tell. Not an overnight fix.
