They should make a Part II of "True Blues".

Post by TAFKAP »

We are 2 years from the 60th season of St. Louis Blues hockey. True Blues was released in 1987(ish) to commemorate the first 20 years. I wish the last 40 could get the same treatment. I'd love to relive some of those plays, players and calls, remastered and in one spot. I know I'd pay money to see it. The Hull years, all those goals, Hull and Oates, Shanny, Cujo, Twist and Chase. Chopper and Pronger, Grant Fuhr getting signed. The 2001 run, WE WANT TACOS! If fans watched the Purina debacle in True Blues, they could tell the story of the Lauries gutting the team, the Pronger trade, the Checketts [censored]. JD and "Come Grow With Us", Oshie drafted, the Steen trade. Andy Murray, Davis Payne, Ken Hitchcock. Perron's white skates, the kid line. Chris Mason's run to the playoffs, Steen's OT shorty against the Kings, "Don't open the Roman Polak door", Backes fighting everyone not on Team USA prior to the Olympics, TJ Sochi, The '16 run, Reaves blowing kisses to the Dallas bench "In that moment, every player on Dallas' bench found their skates really important to look at", Halak and Mooooooose!!!! Jake Allen "Puddles", ROR, Bozak and Maroon, the '19 run. Last in the league on Jan 1, "Do I look nervous?", the Schwartz deflection, the blast that flattened Bishop, The "Lucky 7's Game", the "Hand Pass Game". Winning the First Cup, the parade, the '22 run, the retool, the Offer Sheets, the winning streak, Destroying the Hart and Vezina winning goalie at Enterprise, and............The Future.

What would you add?

Maybe the Mike Danton story gets a mention
As part of the ‘19 arc, I bring up past playoff failures. Bergevin throwing the puck in his own net, the Nolan center ice goal, the he various losses to the Hawks and frankly all the first round exits. Frankly it’s all that that made ‘19 even sweeter

Yeah it did for sure, I forgot the Scotty Bowman/Expansion Team Finals Curse as well, that's really weird.

Wonderful idea. The extension of True Blues. The 1st was 20 years. Maybe more than 2 parts. Maybe start with the transition out of the Arena, or maybe coincide with the major jersey changes.

The original "True Blues" was certainly worthy as a keepsake and a reminder of the franchise's furst two decades of highlights.

It's amazing how little footage was shot and kept from the first 3 seasons, and there exists very little TV footage from game telecasts, which were almost exclusively road games early on. We've all seen many times the Blues taking the ice at The Arena with well-dressed Junior League wives in the parquet seats by the aisle clapping and Big Red legend Larry Wilson a few rows back.

There wasn't much else in the video vaults. Nobody in St. Louis sports media expected the spectacular early success, once they (barely) snuck into the playoffs that first season, and virtually no one behind a St. Louis radio/TV mic knew anything about hockey. I doubt KPLR saved those early road game telecasts with Hall, Plante, the Plagers, and Berenson. And nobody with the Blues expected that long run of lousy hockey during the Ralston-Purina "Checkerdome" (puh-leeze) years, when sold-out Steamers MISL thrillers nearly made the Blues just a memory.

But once TV became far more available for both home and road games, the 1987-current Blues game videos (hopefully still) available are an embarrassment of riches.

If you were there from Day One --- when the Blues' first official game at the "New-Look Arena" featured pregame entertainers Arthur Godfrey, Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians, Anna-Marie Alberghetti and figure skater Aja Zanova (famous on TV from Bic pen commercials) it's hard to believe (and stomach) that the Blues have now played longer at the Kiel-Savvis-Scottrade-Enterprise-Whatever Martha Stewart Tea Room than at the beloved ol' barn on Oakland.

If a new "True Blues" video is to be made, these improvements over the excellent original would surely help:
1. Too many random game action scenes --- almost all road games--- lacked context or chyrons, and without PBP announcer input. But the available technology then was weak.
2. The cartoonish animation was excruciating, especially when depicting excitable head coach Jacques Demers.

Until a new "True Blues" surfaces --- agreed, Jon Hamm would be a fine narrator --- , I'll content myself with my Blues history publications and Patti Smith-Jackson's wonderful " St. Louis Arena Memories" coffee table pictures book.

I was just paging through my St Louis Arena Memories coffee table book a week of so ago. I love everything except the implosion. Sickening when that occurred. I loved the inner roof design before they covered it up.I loved that place.
I think Dan Kelly would be a better narrator of True Blues Part 2 and his connection with his father, Dan and the early days.
Except for old ticket stubs and I Stand for the Blues buttons, we were lucky to have a camera in those days, much less videos.
It was such a shame that not even one of Red Berenson's 6 goals got recorded, but you'd think a newspaper photographer would have taken a picture with the 6 pucks. Maybe I've just missed that.
So many years have passed,it would be hard to select key moments at the Arenas, except 2019 of course.
