Things I cannot find here locally in Woodstock, GA:
- Pork steaks (have to special order the cuts)
- Toasted ravioli
- Ted Drewes (frozen custard)
- Gooey butter cakes (Publix bakery staff looked at me like I was crazy when I described them)
- Sicilian chicken (the Thursday lunch special)
- Jack in the Box tacos
- Fescue (Bermuda and zoysia everywhere)
- Imo's
- White Castle
- Clydesdales at the local brewery
- Water in my basement

Things I have that I didn't in St. Louis:
- A boat on a nearby lake (Lake Allatoona)
- Pine needles clogging my gutters
- Shrimp boil (when Mizzou played Alabama for the SEC Championship a few years back I attended an event hosted by HP where they filled an entire canoe to the brim with shrimp boil).
- A son-in-law and a daughter-in-law
- Boiled peanuts
- 3 extra tons of AC
- Quilts hanging on every wall in my house
I’m down south as well. Publix doesn’t carry pork steaks but if you go to Walmart, there’s a good chance they will have them. And when I was in Athens, they had them at Kroger from time to time.

What’s the trick with boiled peanuts? I still haven’t figured them out. Had a bad one the first time and hadn’t tried since. But headed to the beach and I see them all over for stands so figure I should give another shot.

That place is really good. Some other staples to hit if you find yourself in north county and are off lindbergh. Cuginos, grab yourself the meatballs, they are some of the best I've ever had. Then go across the street and grab some breaded hot wings from Locker Room. Top 5 in St. Louis for sure.

In regards to the rebuild? F-. Why does it get this grade? Because a smell of goblin guts told us he would leave if the Blues won a game in the playoffs. Well they forced a game 7 and this turd is still here. Rebuild successful. Rebuild successfully getting the dumpster feeders out of the can? Not so hot.
I grew up in North County, so now you’re speaking my language! Locker Room does have perhaps the best wings I’ve had, Angelo’s and Pironne’s are chef’s kiss good pizza. I sorely miss Ponticello’s which was up at Bellefontaine and Parker which was always a problem trying to decide between a pizza or their awesome fried chicken. An order of onion rings was always a must. Damon’s for some ribs, if it was a fancy dinner Christo’s or Romine’s. Get a deep dish pizza from Arcobasso’s on W Florissant in Dellwood. I could go on and on…

I've never been to Pearl Cafe, but my favorite is Chao Baan on Chouteau Ave. I used to date a girl whose mother was Thai and my then girlfriend said Chao Baan was a close to her mother's cooking as any she has had in St. Louis.

I grew up in St. Louis but have lived the last couple decades plus in KC...as a kid we used to always go to Frank and Helen's. I see it's not around any more, but was it as good as it is in my memories? I also remember a place called Bandera's. My family knew the family that owned it, if I recall correctly. Anyhow, I remember them all being good, but I also feel like going out to eat was always good when you were a little kid.

We always got our boiled peanuts from an old over-boiled looking guy near Lake Allatoona, he disappeared around Covid. I liked the spicy hot ones. I eat them shell and all, chew and swallow. Some people open them up or spit out the shells. Pretty good car snack. I was shocked to discover my wife likes them, too.

I BBQ pork steaks on a regular basis. We get some good cuts now but we've had some that I wouldn't really call a pork steak, way too thick. I had my first one in college back in Missouri. Surprising how many people haven't ever had one.

Go Dawgs!

How could you not mention Hendels? It's the best in all of North County.
Also - try Henke's in Florissant. Great food and bar - they have tacos which taste exactly like Jack in the Box without the grease - amazing.

I feel like if you went to Sacred Heart, Henkes and BJ's is your jam. Otherwise the other options seem to win out. I think I have only been to Henkes 1 time since the menu overhaul tho a couple years ago when I was in town for the holidays.

What is this Hendels place you mere mortals speak of…a pizza joint? If so, what kind of pizza does it resemble?

Im a born, bred & raised St. Chucker & need to know if this Hendels place is worthy of a trip over yander.

My favorite pizza joint use to be Pio’s, but that place has become a dump and one of the managers Im friends with told me the reason their pizza sux now is cause they went super cheap on the ingredients, one bite and you can tell. I need a new favorite place now.

I was one of the few non-Catholics in Florissant but lived in North American Martyrs parish. I just went to Henke’s for the first time and the tacos killed. Spent many hours at BJ’s in the corkball cages - and drinking Stag!

ahh, north county was defined by your parish or your "boundry" it seemed like when I was growing up. The public school kids were some of my best friends since was all played club soccer together. I just use it because it seems like those parishes call their local watering holes theirs. Our 2 spots were Copperuz and Locker Room.

Smellin drops a chalupa several times a day around here.
