She was a wildly successful pop singer in the late 50s/early '60s, on a concert tour in 1974 when her life was destroyed by being raped at knifepoint in her New York hotel room after a concert. A series of personal tragedies and setbacks followed, and in her autobiography she lamented "My life is regrets from A to Z."
One music biz pro described her singing voice as "A cry all its own", plus her beauty made her an early TV favorite in variety shows. She dominated the pop charts until The British Invasion.

Re: Boomer Crush Connie Francis Dies
Part of her charm & appeal was that she was actually not beautiful, but rather ordinary-looking, which put her right in the mainstream of that era's truly massive teen america cohort - girls weren't intimidated by her but could relate, her charisma & talent carried the day.
