They haven't given any extensions recently to young players. There isn't a single player on the roster that came from their system that has a long-term commitment.

Their lone free agent addition this past offseason was what, a $2MM one-year deal to Maton after they got called out by the union?

They are committed to exactly TWO players after 2026.
In fairness, most of their young players have sucked.
Yes... although I'd chalk more of that up to their deteriorating player development arm.

Could have made easy arguments to sign guys like Edman and Donovan to some longer commitments.

I think some of their reluctance, left unspoken, was their lack of confidence in upskilling their players... and they weren't comfortable with the idea of committing to players who wouldn't eventually get better.

Well, yeah - what else could it be?

Why would they?

At least we aren’t in year 5 of a Dylan Carlson extension.

…and the fact that Edman & Donovan are the best examples might reinforce why there haven’t been any recent extensions.

My first reaction is that doesn't happen in the real world (paid bonuses when conditions not met), then I remembered something like that happened in my company about 15 years ago. So I guess it does happen! Good for Nathan. I wish we had him.
Now Nathan Eovaldi is happy.

A precedent has been set. It must be followed in the future or the next Ranger snub is going to be unhappy.

Then there is that simple little question of "How close is close enough?" and then are the Rangers discriminating when they decide who is close enough.

Fun times ahead.

Blurry arbitrary lines...
Yeah, the precedent is that the Rangers aren’t cheap and won’t look for every corner to squeeze dollars out of their roster.

He was deserving and they took care of him. Players notice that, not just in their clubhouse, but around the league.

And they notice the Cards unnecessarily taking guys to arbitration hearings over small amounts of money… not giving any extensions to young players, and being completely inactive in free agency.
Spot on.

Going to arbitration is now the industry norm and not reserved to the Cardinals. They have given contract extensions to young players like Carlos Martinez, Paul DeJong, Kolten Wong, and a guy like Albert Pujols. They have signed free agents like Johnny Peralta, Dexter Fowler, Brett Cecil, Willson Contreras, and Sonny Gray.
Lying to yourself is a choice you are free to make. Referencing an extension done 2 decades ago as evidence of how the Cardinals are currently conducting business… well… I don’t know how to help you get over that hump.
Ok, let’s eliminate Pujols. The other statements stand.

Honestly, who on this roster would you sign to a long term extension? Winn? Outside of him, there’s nobody on the roster I’m committing to long term at this point. I might explore Liberatore and/or Herrera after the season, but honestly, I need to see more. I have no desire to extend Donovan. He’s a high level JAG, nothing more.
