The Bradbury Building: For fans of "Blade Runner"; "(500) Days of Summer", and "The Artist"

My very first weekend of being a Los Angeles resident saw me taking a Los Angeles Conservancy tour of L.A.'s Great White Way of downtown movie theaters and movie film locations. Right across the street from the Million Dollar Theater is the astounding Bradbury Building, my favorite building in all of L.A., which is rather ordinary-looking outside, but once you enter....are you indoors or outdoors? In a major building or in a city's back alley? Is this the 2020s or the 1920s?

This was a source of much of the location filming in "Blade Runner", and is still a major tourist attraction.

The Oscar winner for Best Picture "The Artist" --- a black and white silent made in this century --- features a dynamite scene where the male and female leads pursue each other in different directions on the Bradbury's cast-iron wrapped stairwell...matching the opposite directions their careers are heading.

If you saw the charming "(500) Days of Summer", featuring aspiring architect Joseph Gordon-Levitt in constant pursuit of his heartthrob Zoey Deschanel (as "Summer"), the Bradbury served the final scene where he's on the top floor and meets another applicant for the architecture job he's seeking...whose name is Autumn.

The Conservancy will return to The Bradbury Building this weekend.

This reminds me of the time that I was waiting tables at the original Uncle Bill's Pancake House on South Kingshighway. It was circa 1972 and one cold winter night, around 2am, the Plager Brothers, Curt Flood and Sonny's (of Sonny and Cher) nephew came in. They were cleary very drunk. We started talking hockey, baseball and of course acting. I mentioned that I used to be a DJ at WKBX in Los Feliz, just about an hour outside of of LA, near the Ventura Heights mall. I told them about the time that the 4 Tops came in and did a live interview and then played, live, in studio their classic hit Can't Help my Self. This was long before the days of autotune and they sounded fantastic. It was a special evening.

Later I was talking to Mr. Flood about his free agency work and I thought it was a conversation that reminded me a of a time I took a road trip with Joe Williams to go see Chinatown at a small theater in Nashville. Those sure were the days. Joe and I drove for hours talking about horses, and hockey and Australian Rules Football and it was raining like you can't imagine. It might have been the remnants of Hurricane Imogene that struck the gulf coast. Joe told me all about his model airplane collection and we of course discussed women, all of the women we both had bedded over the years. This was long before I met my current 5th wife, who is as lovely as a springtime day in New England,

Sonny's nephew ordered blueberry pancakes. This of course takes me back to that classic scene in Pulp Fiction. Bruce Willis was robbed of an Oscar for his role. Barc Plager, who was dating Bob Gassoff's big sister, this was a huge scandal at the time, reminded me of an earlier verision of the Janney/Shanahan deal, only smoked Camel filterless This was the good ole days when you could smoke at eating establishments. The times sure have changed. When the bill came they tipped very mediocre. I couldn't of course complain because they were drunk and some of them played hockey, and even though I fought semi pro in high school, I wasn't going to brawl with the Plagers in Uncle Bills parking lot.
