On pace to win 85. About where Matheny was when he was fired.

Except that team was expected to do more. Given the roster, 85 wins is a job well done.

I'd argue this roster is better (or at least fairly even).

1b - Contreras vs J Martinez - edge Contreras
2b - Donovan vs Wong - close Wong def, Donny off.
SS - Winn vs DeJong - advantage Winn
3b - Arenado vs Gyorko - advantage Arenado
C - Pages vs Yadi - no contest Yadi
LF - Nootbaar vs Ozuna - advantage Ozuna
CF - Scott vs Pham - close. PHAM Off Scott Def
RF - Burleson vs Fowler- advantage Burleson.

SP - 2018 had Mikolas with 18-4. 2025 Gray on pace for 16
SP - Flaherty vs Liberatore- advantage Flaherty
SP - Cmart vs Fedde - advantage CMart
SP - Wacha vs Palante - advantage Wacha
SP - Waino (few starts) vs Mikolas- advantage Waino

BP - Big advantage to 2025

It was expected to do more because Matheny had a history of winning. Marmol took the Cardinals to last place. Give him an extension because he lowered expectations?

Did anyone REALLY expect this team to be five games over at this point? Honestly, do you think this roster is much better than the 22 roster or the roster the year Matheny was fired? Do you remember that Bruce Bochy took the Giants to last place and 100 loss seasons?

I predict Marmol will not get a contract extension.

Too early ! There are 65 games remaining.
We have no idea of what Chaim Bloom feels about having Oli as his long term manager.
It is usually the case , not only in baseball but other pro sports, that a new GM /POBO entering the top spot wishes to put a new person as manager or head coach, unless he is inheriting a perennial winning guy.

It isn't so much that the new POBO feels the manager is not good at what he does but a new POBO knows other talented coaches that he has a closer connection to thru past experiences. If Bloom has a guy like that he likes very much, it may be tough for Oli to retain his job.
The new POBO is starting a new regime and usually wants a NEW voice in the clubhouse to carry out the NEW plan going forward.
You eliminate the situation when you want to do something NEW and the retained manager says 'well we always did it this way before '
You want a new guy who is on the same page with your thinking .

Maybe an unpopular opinion here, but if the team finishes with a winning record and young players continue to develop, I think Bloom keeps oli for 2026.

This allows oli to fulfill his contract and gives Bloom a year to gauge further development while continuing to build the roster he wants.

If there is a work stoppage in 2027, Bloom can make his managerial change then if he feels the need.

I predict Marmol will not get a contract extension.

That might make him feel pressure to win though……

Although I hope you're wrong, it does make some sense.

I think my opinion of Marmol is pretty evident. But I do have some interest to see how he could do without Mo's presence.

He's trying to win but his contract runs through 2026. Why would they give him an extension? Is he threatening to retire if he doesn't get an extension?
