I had no idea who the Cards should pick but I have seen Doyle listed as a top 5 prospect in most rankings.
However....in the less than 3 hours since being drafted I have learned from Cards Talk that:
* He may have an eating disorder?
* He may have attitude issues?
* He may have no secondary pitches?
* He may have temper problems or even be a borderline psychopath?

Yikes!!!
What does that say about the guys ranked behind him?????
I read that scouts think his secondary pitches are fine. I also saw where he is near mlb ready (lets see). No idea about his food consumption. But I hope he is a nut job. This team needs some real attitude.
Some goof has a thread today that he had to lose 19 pounds his last season LOL.
No reason to rush him of course.
If he stinks he’ll be called a “nut job”.
If he’s great he’ll be called “colorful”!
He lost 20 lbs last year. There is reliever risk.

Baseball America loves his FB and gives it a 70 grade. But secondary pitches need work if he is going to be a starter. The best other pitch is a split-finger with a 55 grade. He only throws < 10% of the time.

He could be a great FOTR starter. But not if he only throws a high fastball at 101.

Most of what is mocked here has been reported in respected publications. But hey go right on ahead.

Ronnie Dobbs wrote: 13 Jul 2025 19:56 pm I see a lot of people acting like this is a horrible pick and I don't get it. I said it in the draft thread, but he was the #8 prospect in the draft, according to Baseball America. So, let's say BA is 100% right with their rankings. Is there a huge difference between where the Cardinals drafted and taking the #8 prospect? But in reality I'm sure every team's draft board looks pretty different.

And reading up on Doyle he has the highest ceiling out of any college pitcher in the draft. Yes, he's not as safe as a few of the other college pitchers taken around him, but we have done the safe thing for how long now? We have a brand new minor league system. I like that they're doing something different. And he shoots right up to #2 in our top 10 prospects.

I get it if you follow this stuff and would have preferred another player and are disappointed that they didn't go that route, but I don't understand how anyone could be really upset about this pick.
These are the same people who thought McGreevy was a great high floor pick… ie why we are where we are.

Draft ceiling, develop floor.

I don't know much about this guy except he has an elite fastball. Rated best in draft. His secondary pitches need to be refined. You can do that. But not the other way around.

Articles i have read today all agree that he threw off speed so sparingly is because he simply didn't need it. His fastball was getting everyone out. They stated the percentage of his off speed will increase in pro ball. It's there, he just hasn't needed it.

As the old saying goes, if they can't catch up to your fastball, don't speed up their bat by throwing off speed

I think his floor is top notch setup man. You'd hope for more from the #5 but we've all seen how important that 8th inning guy is. At best a left handed Chris Carpenter?

Based on the Vols coaches comments, I'm really intrigued by Tanner Franklin. Sounds like he may have a floor and ceiling as high or higher then Doyles.

What have the Cardinals need?

A starter, along w/S. Gray, who gets strikeouts!

This kid could be the answer, let's hope he is.

I think under Bloom/Cerfolio we see him no later than May, perhaps even on OD if he has a great spring.

Yep. So first test of the new and improved development system will be to help refine his other pitches. Get him to reach his ceiling and it's a great pick.

Major League hitters can definitely catch up to the fastball. Especially if they can spit on anything else Doyle is throwing and just key on the FB. See this year's version of Ryan Helsley.

This kid is a front line starter with serious swing and miss stuff. Some people here seem to think that if you could throw over 100 your automatically a closer. Incorrect. See Nolan Ryan.
Look at his college stats. He is the real thing.
