This is why the Cardinals are where they are. Donovan is a really good player but because they developed him he has now turned into Chase Utley.

I respect Donovan as much as any player they have had in a awhile but sometimes you have to be bold. With Weatherholdt on the horizon you trade Donovan (if they return is substantial of course), preferably for high level young starting pitching.

Weatherholdt is enormously important to this rebuild or whatever it is so he has to be the real deal. They have to give him every chance to succeed and that would be to plug him at second and call it a day. You have to trust your scouts and your process and expect Weatherholdt to be AT LEAST as good as Donovan. This is no knock on Donovan at all but they could score nicely by moving a really nice player to a real contender that needs that "glue" bat, which is what Donovan is.

Then you have to sign a right handed bat to play left next year.

With the nice pitching you require in return for Donovan you suddenly would have a nice stable of young potential making starters. Expecting McGreevy, Hence, Roby and Matthews to all hit is foolish. As it is they have to replace Fedde, MM and soon Gray so they need more on the pitching front.

Donovan is the way to get it.

It would be bold.

It won't happen.
I like it...trade Hurdy Gurdy. That's JJs floor...being another Hurdy Gurdy.

Problem is finding a RH OF bat to sign. I'd trade 3-3 prospects for Buxton or Colby Thomas
The Phillies are playing Stott and his .304 OBP at second. With the power they have in that lineup I would think they would have a great interest in a high OBP glue, second baseman like Donovan. They are in win now mode.

Would they like Donovan enough to give up Andrew Painter?

Padres
(HUGE series since they hold the final WC spot)

After those games Mo/Bloom should have a good handle on whether to sell, buy or do both before:
3 Games Home 7/28-7/30
Marlins

Of course you could DFA/Trade Mikolas and or Fedde at any time, neither would ever be missed.
Kicking the can down the road...to find out they still suck.
Helsley is probably the only real asset they'll trade that could being back anything of value, won't bring back any better prospect if you deal him 7/20 or 7/28th.

Mikolas and Fedde have zero trade value, Matz won't bring back anything but a lotto prospect.

Noot could go, but he won't bring back a Top 15 prospect.

Maton has value but won't bring back anything special, same w/JoJo.

Doubt they move on this season from Gorman or Walker.

I'd deal Bumbles, they won't.

They won't deal Donny, Winn, Hererra, VSII or Libby.

NADO, Gray and WillyC have NTC's and won't waive (the exception being NADO if the Dodgers come calling).

So as you can see, there's really no rush scouty since they really only have one valuable asset (Helsley) we know they'll trade.
I don't think they have any valuable assets, thats why is be listening to all and any offers.

I'd actively shop their only all star, Hurdy Gurdy. Again, I'm telling teams, the store is open.
It is the proper choice IMO.

Letting this season play out for 100 plus games was prudent. They can add these 100 games to
each players prior results. They don't need to move everyone, but do they need to move a couple/few and
not be paralyzed with apprehensions that they won't get it perfect.

Everything should be tradeable and all offers listened to.

Not one player to build around and would draw people to a game, on the current roster

14-14 in June

These are the Cards gentlemen.
Hey Scouty, I totally agree with you. This team is who we thought they were. Mostly just meh.

I think teams like the Phillies, Jays, Dodgers and Yankees would fall over themselves to get Helsley but what would the return be?

From what I know scouty Donny is viewed as the new TEAM LEADER they want to build around, I'd bet he gets a nice extension at seasons end.
They would want him but they aren’t going to trade a lot for him. Helsely has blown a lot of saves gets hit hard has allowed 45 base runners in 32 innings they are hitting his fast ball he has trouble getting the first batter out. They would want him but if the cardinals are wanting premium prospects they will just go after a good closer instead. They may get a Jordan hicks like return for him.
Maybe,
I think that in today's game that the BP is as important as the SP.
Hels would be a part of deepening any BP he goes to, 7th, 8th, and 9th
inning guy. Cleveland might have knocked off the NYY with a supplement
to Clase.

This is where, IMO, getting a rental for the run has great value. The acquiring team
is on the hook for very little money, $3 million. It may cost them a top 10.
It would be great if that were true but a team isn’t going to trade a premium prospect for him it just won’t happen. But we will find out soon if they do decide to trade him I wouldn’t put it past Mo to do something stupid like keep him for the rest of the season
Obviously one of us has to be guessing incorrectly, but I didn't
mention to 5.

On the Cardinals prospect list,

#4 is Rodriguez
5. Hence
6. Crooks
7. Padilla
8. Davis
9. McGreevy
10. Roby

For a chance at a run, I think that you'd be willing to part with one of those and from the Cards POV
not be too disappointed to receive on of those. To me there's a trade there.
