Phil Maton: Trade Candidate
Just curious what he might fetch in a trade.
Maton has been a journeyman reliever and was pretty well regarding a few years back with the Astros, got himself a pretty fat contract with the Rays, was not good, then was purchased by the Mets in July and was really good down the stretch.
Well, he's having a career year this year. I don't know if he's a guy that a contending team is going to trade for to close games, but if they already have a closer and need another reliever to get to that closer, Maton looks like a great target. What do we think he could bring back if the Cardinals decide to sell?

Re: Phil Maton: Trade Candidate
since he won't be with the Cards next yeat in all probability, trade him at deadline (or this weekend).
I proposed in last night GDT that they trade him to the Yankees for the 39th pick in the draft.

I don’t want to tank but moving on from a player who will no longer be with the team next year works for me.
I’d like to see an org do both build for the future while competing now.

Re: Phil Maton: Trade Candidate
I’d say a higher mid-level prospect close to majors or potential high-end that is still years away.
No near-term high-impact but still above market value. If Cards are less than 4 back at deadline, I’d hate to see him go, but might be the more prudent move.

Re: Phil Maton: Trade Candidate
I’d prefer a draft pick to a guy another team is willing to give up on. They know him best.
Better to pick your own if you have to wait anyway.
Re: Phil Maton: Trade Candidate
^this^
Mo needs to figure out that this kind of move is an option
Re: Phil Maton: Trade Candidate
JoJo and then Phil are our best trade pieces.
Teams are looking for specifics and the 2 specifics that come up the most this week in BP arms : LHP and years of Control. Maton would be next...he's just having a really good year. Package them both together...get a good AA player

Re: Phil Maton: Trade Candidate
I'd be willing to trade ANYONE on this team if it brings back young talent that can build for a WS team in a few years.
Who would you refuse to trade and why?

Re: Phil Maton: Trade Candidate
Wetherholt, Winn, Scott. To build from up the middle.
Hoping that Bernal + Crooks provides defense and enough bat for catcher. But not enough info yet.
Liberatore, Mathews, Roby for the rotation. Hope you have a #2, #3, and #4 in those 3. And oh yeah, there's McGreevy as hope for a #4, #5.
When hope fails as a plan, lather-rinse-repeat from the development system.

Have you seen VSII’s batting stats from college, the minors and MLB? He can’t hit. This team needs a legit CF.RunSup wrote: ↑12 Jul 2025 15:32 pmWetherholt, Winn, Scott. To build from up the middle.

I didn’t mean the minors because I also would not trade Wetherholt or Bernal. Those SPs? Yeah
Re: Phil Maton: Trade Candidate
I’m thinking it is worth serious consideration to sign him for another year. Not sure of trade value but we need some veteran arms.

Re: Phil Maton: Trade Candidate
Don't think it's likely. He's an aging reliever having a career year. He'll, rightfully, sign for whoever is willing to give him the most money. And giving a bunch of money to an aging reliever is never a smart move, so I don't want the Cardinals to do that.
Re: Phil Maton: Trade Candidate
I think the "I don't want to tank" strategy would be giving them too much credit. They have no strategy or vision.Alex Reyes Cy Young wrote: ↑12 Jul 2025 13:19 pmIf they can get something meaningful even if that means 2-3 years out yes

SQUIRREL!!!
Is this the kind of "competitive" team STL should expect in the future. Just accept meandering along and throwing darts at the board..?
This organization has bottomed out and only a solid sell-off and new GM can provide any momentum at this point. You do not need to "fire-sale" it but you really need to finally move the needle, get the new GM in place, and escape from the "era of MO". It has consistently edged toward accepted mediocrity and negative mojo during his reign.
