The NHL free agent frenzy has come and gone. A weak free-agent class made it less entertaining than in past years, but most of the top players have signed for the 2025-26 season. Still, some intriguing UFAs remain available. They won’t move the needle much, but they could help improve a team’s depth. Here are the 10 best UFAs left in the 2025 NHL free agent class.
10. Jon Merrill, Defenseman
Jon Merrill totaled just six points in 70 games this past season, so it may appear as if he doesn’t have much left in the tank, but that’s not necessarily true. He might not provide much offense, but that was never his game anyway. He’s always been a solid bottom-pair defender who excels at the defensive part of the game.

Carcone might be better than someone on the Blues. Not sure if his smarts are good enough though.

Re: Top 10 Remaining NHL Free Agents for 2025 Offseason
I see free agency as a game of musical chairs. At the beginning, the music is playing and players are signing for big money and teams are filling out their roster spots. It’s exciting! Then the music stops and the players that haven’t signed yet look around and see there’s lots and lots of players left and only a few chairs (roster spots) left. These are the guys that most likely thought too highly of themselves and priced themselves out of the market. Perhaps they had some deals on the table but a lot of those offers might be gone now as teams pivoted to other players and now don’t have the room on their roster and/or under their Cap to fit in the player that waited anymore.
This is when the bargains happen. Guys realized the effed up now begin to realize they need to change their outlook and sign with SOMEONE if they want to stay in the NHL. It happens every year.
I’m hoping the Blues can take advantage of this and sign a 3rd pairing vet caliber guy for close to league minimum to around $1M. Maybe even get them on a PTO with no actual monetary commitment closer to camp. Army’s known to be patient. I bet he signs some low hanging fruit later this summer or right before camp.

Musical chairs is a great analogy MN and very well explained. Hell, even bleedyboi should be able to grasp it.STL fan in MN wrote: ↑10 Jul 2025 14:40 pm I see free agency as a game of musical chairs. Super mediocre list. I think the Blues ought to be on the lookout for a veteran 5-7 defenseman, but Grzelcyk probably isn't that guy.

Yep. Which is why a lot of them won’t end up with a contract at all or if they do, it’ll be a cheap one. No needle movers left.seattleblue wrote: ↑10 Jul 2025 15:50 pmLow hanging fruit has dropped on the ground and is starting to rot by the looks of some of that listSTL fan in MN wrote: ↑10 Jul 2025 14:40 pm I see free agency as a game of musical chairs. But an experienced #6-7 caliber d-man? That’s really the only thing I’m hoping to see added still.

Victor O is actually an intriguing guy, but we just don't have the roster space unless we move both joseph and texier. I also think that they want one of the prospects to step up and take that 3rd line wing spot.
