Attendance, worse than Rocks

Re: Attendance, worse than Rocks
We've been talking on here about the Cards FO taking the fans for granted and possibly cooking the golden goose for a couple years now anyway.
Was still surprised over the 4th of July gatherings when asking other usually rabid Card fans about what they thought about this years Cards and got comments like:
Not really following them very close
Won't spend any money on them till they spend some money, and this from a family that has previously spent a lot of money on the Cards
We won't be going to any games this year, heard that one a few times
One said he liked this years team, but they wouldn't be going down to see any games either
Also a frustration by some that they'd have to pay to watch Card games on TV, with the general sentiment it wasn't worth the hassle
Once you lose fans, and there are so many other things to do and be interested in, not sure how easy you can get them back.
We're about 200 miles from STL, and many of these people have been down to STL for other things, but didn't bother with seeing a game.

Transitional year to be sure. Some fans are going to stay away, and that’s understandable.

That’s a very good point. It all depends on expectations. Since the Cardinals have been one of the most successful teams in baseball over a long period of time, the fans expect it. But it may be harder to do now with the big market teams going nuts on payroll. All you can do is bulk up the development system which produces better players on paper. Some of those can be used as trade chips.

Re: Attendance, worse than Rocks
The arrogance, greed, and lack of effort to sustain the once consistent playoff team has led to this. BDW & Mo took the fans for granted and got lazy. Then they got greedy. Now they have a roster full of support level players with no real star power. Is this 3 years in a row with 1 All Star? League minimum.
DeWitt better wake up and decide to take urgent action to overhaul this roster by next season. He risks losing a large portion of the fan base permanently. As has been said, people are gravitating to other things to do. They may not come back. And their kids may not take interest.

There was a noticeable spike when the team was playing well. I don’t have an issue with them not showing to watch bad baseball but it would be nice to see them come out and support if they get back in the division race. I miss the added intensity of a rowdy crowd. Just seems weird without it. Like exhibition or covid games or something.

No knock on Donovan, as he is a fine player, but the AS number would be zero if not for the minimum requirement. Helsley wasn’t a token last year though.JuanAgosto wrote: ↑10 Jul 2025 10:38 am The arrogance, greed, and lack of effort to sustain the once consistent playoff team has led to this. Lots of Cardinal fans come from out of town. If the team is not particularly entertaining, I suspect they find other things to do. Also might be an issue with degradation of downtown. I don't know. I quit my annual visit to St. Louis years ago (when the train started service to the Galleria)

I dont totally disagree. But Helsley was the lone rep. Donovan may not scream All Star, but he is top 10 in average and one of the leagues tougher outs.CorneliusWolfe wrote: ↑10 Jul 2025 10:44 amNo knock on Donovan, as he is a fine player, but the AS number would be zero if not for the minimum requirement. Nonsense. It is NOT "all you can do." It's "all they're willing to do."Cranny wrote: ↑10 Jul 2025 10:35 amThat’s a very good point. It all depends on expectations. Re: Attendance, worse than Rocks
Over the next couple years we are about to find out if the Cardinals issues have more to do with the front office, or with ownership. You can tell by the new coaching and office hires that Bloom does some thing differently. We also are starting to see some prospects that were stalled out show some signs of life. That's good. The improvements are welcome, but is that the root of the problem? The Cardinals have been stale for so long now. When a hitter fails to make adjustments- they head to the bench. When a pitcher loses his fastball- he hits the road. What happens when a POBO, or owner fails to make adjustments, or lose their fastball? Well, sooner or later, people stop showing up. It seems like the owner has the final word. Not true, the marketplace is the boss of every business. The marketplace will tell you how you are doing. They measure every silly thing players do trying to wring the last ounce of production out of them. There are a few simple metrics the owners should look at in regard to the performance of their business. Attendance, revenues, viewership, and so on. Businesses that don't care, or disregard customer satisfaction suffer for it. We're seeing that. Behind the Rockies! HELLOOOOOO!

But rocko, the players have feelings, too. Poor guys.rockondlouie wrote: ↑10 Jul 2025 10:55 amWRONG!
It's sending a message to BDWJr and you know it.

Re: Attendance, worse than Rocks
For out of towners like me it is an expense issue. Travel, lodging, meals, tickets, parking, concessions. It adds up. Just can’t pay that to see sub par product.
Re: Attendance, worse than Rocks
It will probably make a difference when they get Arenado, Walker, and Herrera all back in the lineup at the same time.CorneliusWolfe wrote: ↑10 Jul 2025 10:42 amThere was a noticeable spike when the team was playing well.
