The 1982 Cardinals
The 1982 championship team didn't have a player making $1 million.
In comparison:
In 1995, Bill DeWitt Jr. and his partners purchased the St. Louis Cardinals from Anheuser-Busch for $150 million, according to Statista, Wikipedia, and Redbird Rants. This transaction included the team and surrounding property. The team's value has since significantly increased. According to Forbes, the Cardinals are now worth an estimated $2.55 billion, according to Statista.
Basically what I'm getting at if a team valuates talent properly they can still have a very good team without outrageous contracts. Herzog may have been on of the best every putting a competitive on the field at decent costs.

They also sold the parking garages for half the cost of the purchase price. Competitive to get into a WC maybe but a top 10 payroll has won every WS in the last 20 years except 1. KC Royals. A top 10 is currently $215m. If your happy watching mediocrity great. Not me. Must be elite future HOF superstars in their prime or a legit WS contender with a top 10 payrollOldRed wrote: ↑09 Jul 2025 19:52 pm The 1982 championship team didn't have a player making $1 million.

My First Cardinal World Series. Will always be my favorite. Was 13 years old and it had me on Top of The World. People were congratulating me at school as if I had won it myself. Token Cardinal fan and everyone knew my curious story as to how and why.
Can't top that. Can't get back to 13.

Normally I roll my eyes when CT slides into the same old nostalgia/reminiscing mode.
But since this team sucks and there’s not going to be anything to remember for a long time, why not?
Brummer steals home! Lonnie Smith’s inside the park HR! Celebrate good times, come on!

Re: The 1982 Cardinals
There was Nothing special about the starters on the ‘82 team except they knew HOW to play winning baseball. Today’s game is almost unwatchable if you were around back in ‘82 and that era

Didn't Ozzie ultimately end up being the first 2 mil AAS per year player in MLB?
Re: The 1982 Cardinals
The post was about player evaluation and how good Whitey was at putting a team together and not one player made a million dollars. Bruce was the highest paid player on that team just under 1 mill and we who followed that team how much he meant in winning.
This current management has lacked player evaluation for several years.

Re: The 1982 Cardinals
Basically no power. Many switch hitters and speed to burn. Great defense and a manager that was almost always 3 steps ahead of the opposing manager. A home park that discouraged home runs. A good pitching staff and absolutely no bull[shirt] was put up with by the manager. Herzog made an example of Gary Templeton and that combined with Herzog shipping out a lot of players tuned the Cards into a powerhouse of speed and defense. Still the most exciting team I've ever watched. I loved those times. Then they became a lethargic american league style team. Ugh.OldRed wrote: ↑09 Jul 2025 19:52 pm The 1982 championship team didn't have a player making $1 million.

Let me ask., If Cardinals offers the same free agent $$$ as Dodgers do or New York teams, how many of the guys would choose St. Louis?Youboughtit wrote: ↑09 Jul 2025 20:01 pmThey also sold the parking garages for half the cost of the purchase price. The Big Apple , sunny LA beaches or midwestern St. Louis ?
I was born raised in St. Louis so fond of my hometown but those elite players will go to NY or LA .

Re: The 1982 Cardinals
That’s why you selectively pick and aquire them via trade and sign them long term buying out arb years. Clearly they can’t draft and develop them and they extend. Maybe Wetherholt will be the guy but they need a power hitter and I am not sure he’s a 35/100 guy at Busch. There is always a Bobby Witt Jr type of player that might not want to play in big mediaramfandan wrote: ↑09 Jul 2025 23:02 pmLet me ask., If Cardinals offers the same free agent $$$ as Dodgers do or New York teams, how many of the guys would choose St. Louis?Youboughtit wrote: ↑09 Jul 2025 20:01 pmThey also sold the parking garages for half the cost of the purchase price. Re: The 1982 Cardinals
Here’s my dig. The 82 team was an underdog. And won.
In my time.
67- even odds. Won.
68- even odds. Maybe slight underdogs. Lost.
82- underdogs. Won
85- favorite. Lost. Sad.
87- favorite. Lost.
04- favorite. Lost. Never led one complete inning in that four game sweep.
06- slight underdog to Tigers. Big underdogs to Mets. Won.
11- underdogs. Won. Lucky.
13- favorite. Lost.
No more.
