Central Division free agency round up, how do the Blues stack up now?
By Joe DeMarini

A week after the free agency frenzy, things have mostly settled down around the league. Now's as good a time as any to take a quick look at what the rest of the Central Division accomplished, and if the St. Louis Blues have done enough to remain competitive.
Chicago Blackhawks
Woof. The Connor Bedard era is not off to a great start in Chicago. The Blackhawks have done next to nothing in free agency, with the only moves of note a peripheral trade for Andre Burakovsky and re-signing Ryan Donato. They've got over $20 million in cap space and, with all the major free agents off the market, nowhere to really spend it.

Here's a similar article looking at the conference rather than just the division.

NHL Western Conference free-agency recap

Nearly 200 players have signed contracts since NHL free agency opened July 1. Here's how free agency has impacted every team in the Western Conference.
Contracts are listed in parentheses (h/t Spotrac) with years and average annual value (AAV).
- clip -
St. Louis Blues: The Blues made a couple of smart additions, highlighted by the signing of center Pius Suter (two years, $4.125M AAV) — an all-situations center who can provide real utility both down the lineup and on special teams. Nick Bjugstad (two years, $1.75M AAV) looks like an ideal fit at fourth-line center. The addition of 22-year-old defenseman Logan Mailloux, acquired in a trade from Montreal for equally promising forward Zach Bolduc, is a good lesson in how to properly capitalize on years of asset accumulation.

The people that don't understand what Chicago is doing are either bandwagon fans or writers that get paid to say something controversial.

Almost all of the vets are gone after next year while Bedard, Knight and Nazar need new contracts. Finally they have somebody spending money wisely instead of shipping off promising youth for spare parts. They'll still be a lottery team but much more watchable without bums like Jones and Brodie bringing the team down.
