Big test for USMNT tonight
If we want to play with the big boys of the world, we're going to have to at least be able to beat the only other real big boy of the continent. Beat Mexico!
Re: Big test for USMNT tonight
As Alexi Lalas said Mexico is playing with their A team.
The US is not.
How embarrassing for Mexico if they lose to the US.

It's a good thing that none of the players on the Mexican National Team play for professional clubs so they don't feel the need to skip this tournament for "rest".

I'm not just saying this because the US lost, and deservedly so, but the only thing that game was going to illustrate was how a fairly inexperienced team would hold up against formidable competition. The roster that plays in the World Cup will be and was always going to be markedly different.BrummerStealsHome wrote: ↑06 Jul 2025 10:48 am If we want to play with the big boys of the world, we're going to have to at least be able to beat the only other real big boy of the continent. Perhaps there are some individual performances from this tournament that are noteworthy - I would say Malik Tillman's stock value went up.

Yeah...what an idiot thinking he deserves an off season.todd-parker wrote: ↑06 Jul 2025 20:14 pm It's a good thing that none of the players on the Mexican National Team play for professional clubs so they don't feel the need to skip this tournament for "rest".
While we're at it - let's make hockey play a 230 game schedule and baseball will be a year round sport.

Yeah, I'd temporarily forgotten that we were playing with somewhat of a B-team roster. That in itself is a bit frustrating. With a couple of officiating calls going the other way we might have won last night, but it is clear that Mexico outplayed the US.mjg wrote: ↑07 Jul 2025 10:13 amI'm not just saying this because the US lost, and deservedly so, but the only thing that game was going to illustrate was how a fairly inexperienced team would hold up against formidable competition. How about Tim Weah?
Doesn’t look like Mbappe is having much of an off-season either. Don’t see him complaining.
PSG are still playing.

The difference is we have players on major Euro teams. Mexico does not.BrummerStealsHome wrote: ↑07 Jul 2025 10:51 amYeah, I'd temporarily forgotten that we were playing with somewhat of a B-team roster. That in itself is a bit frustrating. Someone should tell Edson Alvarez and Cesar Huerta and Cesar Montes and Guillermo Ochoa.winonsports wrote: ↑07 Jul 2025 13:30 pmThe difference is we have players on major Euro teams. Someone should.

I know it’s relative but it’s interesting that you categorize the teams those players are on as ‘major’. Perhaps a better stat would be games played. I would imagine the likes of Juventus and PSG played more games than the clubs of those players.todd-parker wrote: ↑07 Jul 2025 13:46 pmSomeone should tell Edson Alvarez and Cesar Huerta and Cesar Montes and Guillermo Ochoa.winonsports wrote: ↑07 Jul 2025 13:30 pmThe difference is we have players on major Euro teams. I would also surmise that the Americans and other players participating in the Club World Cup are contractually obligated to do so.

Looks like Chelsea isn’t going to have much of an off-season either.
I bet they are happy about that.

There's nothing relative about the difference between West Ham and Juventus.mjg wrote: ↑07 Jul 2025 20:13 pmI know it’s relative but it’s interesting that you categorize the teams those players are on as ‘major’. Look at PSG.
Still playing.
Not much of an off-season for them.
They looked pretty happy about it.
