Ortiz pitching scandal and Jontay Porter scandal

Post by rezero »

I was reading about both of these issues, but here is a short summary.

Jontay was a GLeague player that was occasionally boosted to the NBA. In those games, sport books would have an over/under on his stats. He was arrested for having someone base bets on the under, then faking an injury at the start of the game to cash out.

Ortiz is being accused of having someone bet on whether the first pitch of an inning was a ball or strike, then intentionally throwing a ball.

In both cases it is just too easy for players to get pulled into the betting scene with a sure win easy buck. Neither understand the AI tools these places have to look at unusual betting patterns. It feels like there needs to add some more regulation on the types of bets being offered and only have bets that are significant in the outcome of a game. All of these small one occurrence type bets (like makes or misses his first FT) are too easy to pursued a young athlete to throw.

The gambling sites and bookmakers are the ones who catch this stuff.

I'd say Ortiz's MLB career is over.
