On a contender he would be a LH bench bat who spells the 1B once a week. On the Cardinals he's graded on a curve due to the lack of high end offensive talent.

Burly is a nice complimentary piece for a set team, but not a franchise builder. In the OF, he blocks a potential big bat. Same at 1b. He just isn't what the Cards need to build around.
He is an excellent first baseman and a decent outfielder, unfortunately we have a catcher playing first base.

I know this is an old thread, but I want to respond to this-

Yes, we have a lapsed catcher playing DH (and hitting fine, thank you). It is more evidence that this team is not built for long-term success the way it is currently constituted. Gorman, Walker and Burly should all be DH. The difference between Burly and those two is that Burly is pretty much near his ceiling. He is a complimentary piece, high floor, mediocre ceiling. Gorman and Walker, on the other hand are high ceiling, low floor guys who have not reached potential. If they develop, they will be star players to build around. That is a big "If" right now. So you hang on to your safe bet (Burly) unless someone offers a Gorman-Walkerish player who is meeting potential.
"The difference between Burly and those two is that Burly is pretty much near his ceiling" How can you be sure of that?.
My opinion is based upon scouting reports of the three from the time they were drafted. If your infatuation for a player is such that you cannot see that the experts rate Burleson's tools below Gorman and Walker, you can't be helped. Can you tell the difference between Freddie Freeman and Justin Turner? The Dodgers would not build around Justin Turner. They built around the megatool players, Turner was merely a great complement.
Eventually, it's about actual production. Not projection.

He would be the starting first baseman on more teams than you think. Maybe even a few contending teams. Pure hitters are quite valuable.

I suggest you get control of yourself, unless if you and your socks want to be permanently banned as you were on The Cardinal Nation. There is no one here familiar with the Honky Tonk Man handle who does not believe it is you. If anyone disagrees please say so.

Very few, even other screwballs, would want to waste their time on your baseless stupidity. Just stick to baseball discussion instead of trying to stir up trouble.

He is currently out-producing those two guys with high potential. Personally, I would trade Gorman because I don't believe he will ever be productive enough. But productive as he may be, Burly is a lineup problem. He is a .289 hitter with .457 slugging and plays positions that require a lot more power. As someone said previously, he is short on tools. he is an overachiever. He is a 3-tool player. 3-tool players are contributors, not cornerstones.

The Cards have a surplus of 3-toolers right now. Because Burly is actually performing, he may bring back in trade the kind of young plyaer the Cards really need. that said, I wouldn't coplain if they signed him to 4/$36M.

Burly needs to be able to maintain a +.800 OPS to have good value. Can he do that for a season with Busch stadium as his home ballpark?
Remains to be seen, but when he's not hitting, he's a negative value to a team because of his lack of other plus tools.
Cards shutout out in 5 of the last 7 games when Burly starts.
Burly's bWAR has been hanging around +1.0 for a while now, but he did have a great June as his net WAR for the other months this year are negative.
He's ok, and better currently than either Walker and Gorman.
Still, I'd strive to have starters that have a decent chance to be at least +3 bWAR guys for a season.
For Burly, he'd need about 3 hot June type months every season, or become more consistent every month to ever sniff a +3 type season. June gives us hope that maybe he could do that moving forward.
I'd strive to have more complete type position starters that can provide value even when they're not hot with the bat.
If Herrera can learn to play LF decently by next year, maybe the DH opens up for Burly. That said, I'd often be exploring what Burly's trade market looks like.

Significantly less than Noot, about the same as Gorman's and more than Walker's would be my guess although I don't have free access to the BTV's numbers anymore, so not sure. Maybe someone can fill in with more update numbers on the current estimates.
Once again just guessing, but think Noot's is around +30M, Burly's around +12, Gorman's maybe a shade less, and Walker's now in single digits.
