Re: Donovan hitting lead-off
We are 9-4 since he was put in the leadoff spot and have scored 72 runs in those 13 games. I would say overall it’s more than working, it’s excelling. He’s literately been the only regular not hitting since becoming the leadoff hitter. So I wouldn’t mess with it.

20 of those runs came against the hapless ChiSox in two games.Futuregm2 wrote: ↑30 Jun 2025 14:37 pm We are 9-4 since he was put in the leadoff spot and have scored 72 runs in those 13 games. We also got shutout in back-to-back games, scored only one run in another.
Donny's not hitting since being moved to leadoff, I'd put Noot back there.
When Nootbaar gets on base at least twice in a game, the Cardinals are 28-12.
When Noot scores at least one run in a game, the Cards are 20-7. When he scores two or more, they’re 7-1.

Re: Donovan hitting lead-off
First, anyone can hit anything in 59 PAs.
Second, lead-off has been a black hole for the Cards all year. Donovan's line is shabby but it fits in perfectly with the team's lead-off OPS. Nootbaar's 692 OPS in more than 300 PAs isn't much better.
The key is runs. I'd be interested in how many runs the team has scored in the first inning for each lead-off man, a comparison with other teams, and an adjustment for quality of pitching faced. Anyone?

Re: Donovan hitting lead-off
I don’t know, when Donny was hitting 3rd we were terrible in RBI from the 3rd spot of the lineup. We’re averaging 5.5 runs per game with him hitting leadoff. We’ve scored 5+ runs in 9 of the 13 games that Donovan has been in the leadoff spot. Yea, we were shutout twice. But overall it’s been an explosive lineup over the last two weeks. I like having guys that are actually hitting the ball with some power in the 3rd-6th spots like we have right now.rockondlouie wrote: ↑30 Jun 2025 14:47 pm20 of those runs came against the hapless ChiSox in two games.Futuregm2 wrote: ↑30 Jun 2025 14:37 pm We are 9-4 since he was put in the leadoff spot and have scored 72 runs in those 13 games. Re: Donovan hitting lead-off
I will say, Donovan should hit leadoff vs RHP. Against LHP, I’m not sure about it. I’d say heck no against LHP, but our options to hit leadoff vs LHP aren’t great. Maybe Winn?
We really need a good RH bat that can hit for power. Even after Herrera gets back from the IL.

His splits support this. Huge difference righty vs lefty pitcher this year.Futuregm2 wrote: ↑30 Jun 2025 14:56 pm I will say, Donovan should hit leadoff vs RHP. Against LHP, I’m not sure about it. I’d say heck no against LHP, but our options to hit leadoff vs LHP aren’t great. Maybe Winn?

I'm a huge fan of Donovan so this isn't me ragging on him, just don't like him at lead-off.
When I. Hererra gets back, I would drop Donny out of the #3 spot where I've never liked him hitting anyway.

There are not many options other than Donovan the roster is terrible, and no walker will not help if and when he returnsrockondlouie wrote: ↑01 Jul 2025 09:15 amThrow yet another shutout on your calculations.Futuregm2 wrote: ↑30 Jun 2025 14:51 pmI don’t know, when Donny was hitting 3rd we were terrible in RBI from the 3rd spot of the lineup. They have still been better since he moved to the leadoff spot. They are averaging over 5 runs per game during that time. The 14 games before that they scored 12 less runs, averaging 4.29 runs per game.rockondlouie wrote: ↑01 Jul 2025 09:15 amThrow yet another shutout on your calculations.Futuregm2 wrote: ↑30 Jun 2025 14:51 pmI don’t know, when Donny was hitting 3rd we were terrible in RBI from the 3rd spot of the lineup. The shutouts have all happened with a LHP on the mound, which I acknowledged that I don’t like him leading off vs LHP. Just like I don’t like Burly playing at all much less hitting 3rd vs LHP. I’m not sure what the answer is though since Noot isn’t much better vs LHP either. They need to get a RH bat. And I’d try Winn at leadoff vs LHP, although he isn’t as good this year as he was last year vs LHP.

Winn is doing too well to move him from the #2 hole.
When Hererra returns, I'd drop Donny to #5 (behind Hererra/#3 and WillyC/#4) but ahead of NADO who I'd drop to #6.
And man the LHP is becoming a big problem, they're making them all look like Sandy Koufax.
Re: Donovan hitting lead-off
Maybe against LHP. Noot has a sub .700 OPS vs LHP this year, too, though. Donovan is a good leadoff hitter vs RHP (.342 avg .412 OBP).rockondlouie wrote: ↑01 Jul 2025 09:42 amI'd move Noot back there.Futuregm2 wrote: ↑01 Jul 2025 09:26 amThey have still been better since he moved to the leadoff spot. And yea, as bad as we are vs LHP though we’re about middle of the pack (17th) in OPS vs LHP. Two of the other potential WC teams (SD/SF) are below us in OPS vs LHP. And we’ve been without our best RH bat for about 1.5 months now this season.
