Sounds like there was also a package in place from MN that centered on Rossi. Buffalo elected the UT option instead. Personally, I’d have taken Rossi in a heartbeat but maybe his RFA status factored in.
They’d probably be iffy signing Rossi for the same reasons the Wild are. That and I’d find it unlikely Rossi would even want to sign longterm in Buffalo.
They seemed dead set on wanting a RD as part of the return as well and Utah could do that.

Buffalo got fleeced, but this is what happens when you are constantly drafting in the top 10 and don't have success. You have to move on from the age group consolidation. There's only 2 ways that model swings when it's as extreme as what is going on in buffalo. It's either you have what Buffalo has going on, where players don't want to extend there and they haven't figured out how to win so they are constantly trading at a loss. Or you get the Blackhawks of the 2010s where your core is absolutely ridiculous and you have a dynasty style team. There really is no in between when you get to this level of ineptitude.
That being said, the ROR trade wasn't the catalyst for their demise, it was the last kick in the groin region that showed that Buffalo had no direction. I can't remember the player but he was on the caps, about 3 years ago Chiklits did a podcast with him and he talked about how the Sabres had a good locker room culture going, and they felt like they were about to turn the corner. The front office then in his words "started playing fantasy nhl video game hockey" and started trading away core pieces. On paper they got more talented, but the locker room culture went to shiz.
We all know ROR was the real captain of the 2019 stanley cup blues. The players even acknowledged it. He was the catalyst for the cup. When those types of players are saying something is wrong in your organization, it's time to listen. No different than Schenn. Guys are salt of the earth and will go above and beyond for their teammates. Buffalo is a dumpster fire. We should be grateful that even tho we are in this rebuilding era and just got a sniff of the playoffs, we have great carry over leadership from ROR's tenure here as a blue and Schenn is doing the right thing. If we do move on from Schenn this year, next year, or he retires a blue, we better hope we have the next guy that will grind it out as hard as those guys have.
No cup without ROR.
Facts. The Blues culture prior to ROR was partying playboys, underachievers and selfish prima donna’s. O’Reilly set the work ethic gold standard that Berube used to coerce the prima donna’s into finally giving max effort.
If anyone deserves a statue it’s him and Chief. Both will be locks for the Blues HOF.
No, yall don't want Kesselring but I forgive you. Jeez some of you thought Dunn was a stud. We have a good defense right now and adding fluff like Kesselring would not help. Heck you all would run him out of town after a handful of mistakes that he would surely make in his first few games. As for top 4 ? The guy played 17 minutes a game.

Kesselring’s value was greatly enhanced by playing the Blues last year. I think nearly half his goals came vs STL.

I think a statue for ROR and Chief might be stretching it. But both in their elder age being in the Blues HOF is reasonable. The sad part is that the only guys from the cup team that have a shot at a Statue will be Binner and Thomas most likely. Binner can do it because of the 2019 season. But Thomas would get one if future play holds. Guys like Petro and Tarasenko gave up their shots which is a bummer.
ROR tho will go down in history as one of the most if not most Pivotal player in the trajectory of the Blues franchise. If you had to ask yourself, who was the most important player in the decade of 2010-2019, the top 2 candidates are ROR and Binner and that is only 1 season. That's how monumental they were.

This is a good hockey trade. People just want to hate on Buffalo. They got a top 4 RHD that they desperately need and a middle six winger that brings needed physicality to their lineup. There is definitely another big move for them to make also.
I think people underestimate how much contracts play into a trade.
Kesserling is an rfa next year but is only making 1.4 million this year.
Utah just signed peterka to a 7.7 cap hit. He was a 68 point player but is garbage defensively. Im not sure at 7.7 mil, its that valuable of a contract. People were up in arms about kyrou until last year cuz of his defensive play and his cap hit isnt that much higher.
Kevyn Adams reminds me of the old poker adage:
If you can't spot the sucker at the table within the first 30 minutes, you're it.
Poor Kevyn has been at the table for several hours and is still looking for the sucker.
I watched the Sabres pre-draft presser the other day and was baffled that he wasn't ready to answer the Peterka question.
He generally stumbled around most of the questions that day.
Hopefully for Sabres fans this is his last kick at the can. You never know though because of the Pegula connection.
Buffalo is going to need Benson and/or Quinn to breakthrough this year or else they will struggle to score enough goals.
They might find a scoring forward to replace Peterka in the upcoming expected Bo Byram deal.
The return from Utah is still part of the fallout from the lack of response on the hit to Thompson.
I like Kesselring but don't expect him to be more than a bottom pair guy.
Does Doan have the talent to be a 2nd liner? Not sure about that.
Right now the Sabres are loaded on RW:
Thompson
Tuch
Doan
Quinn
Buffalo is weak on LW unless they move Thompson back to center and Kulich to LW.
Ostlund might be another center option if they're convinced Thompson is better suited on RW.
Benson should be a top 6 forward, but Zucker is a 3rd liner.
The Sabres could be another team that could enter the mix for Noah Dobson.
If there is still a center available at pick 9 that NY covets I could see Adams trading away that #9 pick and Byram for Dobson.
