Do you understand that we saw history last night?

Post by Futuregm2 »

Sonny Gray was the first pitcher in MLB history to throw:

9 IP
1 hit or less
0 ER
0 BB
11+ K
less than 90 pitches

I knew it was a great performance. Didn’t know it was all-time kind of great. Cool stuff.

That's great. I wonder when they started keeping track of pitches thrown.

1988 I think.

Darryl Kyle 1993 line pretty close. 0 hits 83 pitches (least ever) 9Ks 1BB.

Sonny needs to do better next time!

“Sonny Gray of the Cardinals, the only pitcher (that can be determined, anyway) in MLB history to throw a 9 inning shutout with 1 hit and 11+ strikeouts in under 90 pitches.”

Actually I think Koufax did it as well.

Actually, he didn’t.

In Koufax’s 4 no hitters, he threw 97, 111, 113 and 138 pitches.

He only threw one 1-hitter, and used 135 pitches.

Right-thx for the correction.
I was confusing it with the Maddox pitching stats…

That also wasn’t a shutout… gave up one unearned run.

The pitcher with fewest pitches ever thrown in a 1-hit (or less) shutout is… Jon Lieber?!?

Yes Jon Lieber. May 24, 2001 he shutout the Reds on 78 pitches.

One walk, two strikeouts.

The most impressive aspect of Gray’s start is that he piled up 11 Ks with so few pitches.

The closest Maddux ever came to such a feat was sadly against the Cardinals.

1995 - 2H, 0BB, 0ER, 9K - 88 pitches.

I leave the country for a week and a half and I find out that not only did I miss this great pitching performance, but I apparently got banned for a week as well. First time in 20+ years here. Dramatic stuff.
