Why Did Carbonneau Fall To 19?

Post by Red7 »

The general consensus seems to be this is a great pick, especially at 19. However, given his reviews, why did he fall to 19? What am I missing?

The Blues were the last pick before a new tier began, and someone up there was going to be available that was bandied as a higher pick. Someone was going to fall, and at the very top they tend to go centers before wing so wings often drop. Such as Victor Eklund who I had right above Bear and Carbonneau. Players like Cootes were originally slotted lower (but in his case left a great final impression). Carbonneau is way above Cootes for me

He’s a pure winger and wingers just don’t have good value right now. Teams were reaching on premium positions instead. There might be some merit to the other teams decision but it landed us a hell of a prospect so I’m not complaining.

I get why teams are doing it, but it doesn't do any good to have 14 centers if no one can put the puck in the net.

Yep, this. Wingers almost always seem to “fall” a bit. But Carbonneau’s average draft ranking was around 15/16 so it’s not like he really fell. Or at least not much.

Run on centers. Nesbitt picked lower than expected.

When Nesbitt went 12 I thought, "this might really happen" because there were also two great LD sitting there on the board at that time still plus Eklund, Bear, Reschny and I felt like someone would reach on Cootes too out of positional need

The Pens reaching on Kindel helped as well.

I can’t believe Kindel went before Carbonneau. Dubas definitely made some questionnnable picks…

Since he's going backwards, is it your left or my left?
