Honestly if this is how the drafts are going to be done from here on out I'll stop watching and just catch the results. That was unbelievably boring and uneventful. They should have called it the NHL Bro Hug Challenge. These guys are good at the bro hugs. This was ridiculous. I hated the whole presentation.

Bettman said at the beginning of the night that they were going back to the in-house format next year.HighStick wrote: ↑27 Jun 2025 23:00 pm Honestly if this is how the drafts are going to be done from here on out I'll stop watching and just catch the results. They might revisit the concept again at some point down the line, but I think it'll be a while with how much of a trainwreck this was.

I hope so. I never hated a draft so much in my life. Tonight was just bad TV. The kind of TV show that gets cancelled.kimzey59 wrote: ↑27 Jun 2025 23:03 pmBettman said at the beginning of the night that they were going back to the in-house format next year.HighStick wrote: ↑27 Jun 2025 23:00 pm Honestly if this is how the drafts are going to be done from here on out I'll stop watching and just catch the results. Just brutal planning and marketing of the product.
Last year at Sphere. For those of you that haven't been Sphere is spectacular. Could not have been a better place to hold the draft.
This year it's in a room in LA (I guess) with a dais and a stage and some piped in white noise. People like the Goo Goo Dolls and Nikki Glaser appeared via a magician's box or zoom to announce draft picks. And then the pics had zoom meetings with the team that drafted them. What marketing and exec level geniuses thought this was a good idea for the public to consume?
And I'm sorry to say this because I think Nikki is great, especially on the roasts, but good grief what is she doing to her face? Why do (famous) women think that is a good look? She's like five years from looking like Joan Rivers did at the end.

I hope they go back to the teams all being in the building. Agree with many here that the Sphere draft was very good. They had video difficulty with a few of the teams trying to talk with the just drafted player. The Carbonneau after pick coverage felt rushed. After the Blues pick, they spent 5 minutes talking about some old-time Stars player and showing the Stars draft war room. We were like waste the time for this during the STARS pick. Not on the Blues time.
Re: This draft format sucks
Same here. And blame the format on some MBA at the NHL office who found this correlation between the length of the show, the more sponsors we grab and the more money we make. What they failed to realize was that a draft remains - for the overwhelming majority - local in interest. After your team pics, the channel switches and you lose the eyes. The NHL tried to make this the NFL Draft.Old_Goat wrote: ↑28 Jun 2025 06:23 amAfter the 19th Pick...the TV was off.HighStick wrote: ↑27 Jun 2025 23:08 pmI hope so. Now, I know a lot of folks hated Pierre Mcguire (not our poster - the commentator). But his encyclepedic knowledge of these kids - their junior and even midget careers - was also fascinating to me.
I for one saw a lot of blue collar kids getting picked. Major points to Brady Martin. Nashville got a great young man. His family couldn't take time away from the family farm, so he didn't go to LA and they had a party on the farm.

Reading on X today evidently the NHL didn't want this format it was the teams and the GMs who did.bud white wrote: ↑28 Jun 2025 08:25 amSame here. They wanted to save on time and money. I don't know how much it is but teams were complaining it was incredibly expensive to ship their entire scouting depts to these locations for 4 days so they thought this was a better way.
They voted 26-6 to do it this way, and very few last night thought it was good. One of the few was Yzerman, but I haven't really heard of any others that liked it. They also believe that it was a major contributor to a serious lack of trades.
I would imagine this is a one and done.
