Leafs re-sign Tavares @4.38M x 4Y
He definitely could have gotten more money on the open market.

Love him some Chief.
Re: Leafs re-sign Tavares @4.38M x 4Y
This would be a decent indication that Bennett is not going to make it to the open market

Well I guess that goes to show ya, don't believe all these "reports".....what a great deal for the leafs though.
Kind of makes you wonder if guys like that get paid under the table, I'm sure they do.

Wow. That is surprising. Really did give them a big hometown discount. Basically ROR's deal. Good on him. Opening up space to sign Ekblad and/or Ehlers.

that is way below what I would have thought he'd take. I was thinking 6-7.bluetunehead wrote: ↑27 Jun 2025 11:57 am He definitely could have gotten more money on the open market.

That's a lot of money tied up in centers and one of them would have to play third line minutes.
But yea, I'd say it is almost a given Bennett is staying in FL 8x8

Playing in his home town and he has made a ton of money over the years, so guessing he just wanted to stay put. Not many people would sacrifice $2 million or so per year so more power to him.

So just because Toronto might not sign him Bennett isn't going to test the market?MiamiLaw wrote: ↑27 Jun 2025 12:09 pmThat's a lot of money tied up in centers and one of them would have to play third line minutes.

Taveras has already made $111M before this contract. At this point, maybe money was not his first priority.
Re: Leafs re-sign Tavares @4.38M x 4Y
The chatter is that the Bennett deal is basically done and he's staying in FLA. I don't think the Tavares deal effects Bennett's decision. It's the other way around. I think Toronto signed him now because they know Bennett won't hit UFA so they lock down 2C.bluetunehead wrote: ↑27 Jun 2025 12:11 pmSo just because Toronto might not sign him Bennett isn't going to test the market?MiamiLaw wrote: ↑27 Jun 2025 12:09 pmThat's a lot of money tied up in centers and one of them would have to play third line minutes.

Thats awesome. I love it when players choose the hometown discount.

Pierre Lebrun was reporting just yesterday that 5 mill AAV was way too low an offer and was not going to get the deal done. Got that one wrong for sure.

That makes more sense. I fully expect Bennett to stay. It's too perfect of a fit not to unless he just absolutely wants to chase the biggest contract. I just suspect Toronto wanted to keep Tavares regardless, particularly with him so willing to take a discount.MiamiLaw wrote: ↑27 Jun 2025 12:14 pmThe chatter is that the Bennett deal is basically done and he's staying in FLA.
