And the kicker; Peterka's extension with Utah is 5 years with a 7.7 mil aav.

And Utah got him to sign as a part of the deal.

Peterka extension with Utah: 5 years x $7.7 million = $38.5 million.

Really the only the viable explanation is Peterka wanted out and refused to re-sign with Buffalo and they were forced to take a bad deal basically.

But man, I think I would’ve called that bluff if what they got was the best return. Take him to arbitration, let him sign an offer sheet and then match it but this is just an insanely uneven trade. Yeesh.
