I want no part in drafting a light hitting, "well-rounded" high school shortstop. Not at 5, at 5 they should be taking high potential pitching or a high potential power bat.

the latter doesn't exist this year. So, you're left with Anderson, Arnold, Witherspoon....or the new flavor of the week: Gage Wood, CWS No-Hitter...who missed 2 months this season with a Shoulder Impingement. The next option is the best pitcher in the draft, Hernandez. But it's been said, that the Cards aren't targeting the High School pitching phenom.
Arquette would be your most consistent bat, he'll hit for average power...maybe. Irish would be your best bet at power...he's limited to a below avg to avg corner OF, decent catcher's arm will make him stick in RF/LF, and escape the DH moniker. He's probably an overreach at #5...but I really like his bat.
good Mock, picks look good...until you see Doyle at #4. We'll see how that plays out the next few days as Post-Combine mocks start flowing in. Maybe Mr. Doyle impressed everyone? He has too many secondary pitches that are well below average and a work in progress. Big risk there, and the Reliever tag still applies to him. You can't deny his fastball, its' legit, and he can move it so many ways.
our pick was : Eli Willits, SS, Ft.Cobb-Broxton HS, Okla.
seems to be a theme. The industry must be hearing things.

I've probably missed it but what's your take on Willits' bat? There's a lot to like in his profile and I sort of liken him to Max Clark (Willits is a SS/potential CF being an obvious difference whereas Clark is an OF only) in that he does a little bit of everything well, but just doesn't have much power. Clark seems to have more speed but it's just so hard to get any sort of legit data on HS prospects. I go back and forth on really liking Willits or worrying that he won't have enough power in his swing.
Assuming Holliday, Anderson, and Arnold are gone the group that I like is Willits or an underslot sign with Witherspoon, Irish (based on your reports), or Aloy. Just not super high on Arquette. I could be convinced on Doyle - his fastball is abnormally fun, but only one year of great results with it.

he was probably 1-1/1-2 in next year's draft if you believe all the pundits, then he reclassified. Will power come? Maybe, they expect to fill out more. Being 17, there's clearly room for that. If he can hit like has in HS and the different exhibition series (Future Stars, etc, etc), he'll be good. I believe he's going to hit, and SS probably won't be his position once he gets to the majors...if not before. If we want a SS to stick, Carlson's your bet.
I want to be knocked off my feet with a #5 pick, just like everyone else...but this draft isn't built like last season. Max Clark is a pretty good comp. I've seen him against Palm Beach last season, highly impressed. He did hit 7 HR's with Lakeland, and that's a CHORE...they designed their Ball Park to be just like Detroit's...abysmal dimensions with the Gulf Wind kicking in.
You have a right to feel good about Willits. He was raised properly...ala Holliday.

Hope he hits for more power than his dad. His dad had 0 career MLB HRs in 1014 PA. Career .302 SLG%

I don’t think Cards would avoid a middle infielder just because of Winn and JJ.
I'm not ruling out Avia at this point, but I'd be surprised if it wasn't Holliday or Anderson going off the board first. The Nationals haven't really been overly motivated to save money early in the draft. They usually stick to around slot.
Saw a podcast tonite from a draft expert who said none of the current draftees would crack the top 7 from last year. Only possible exception would be Hernandez but the risk on rh high school pitchers is very high.
Said good chance Seattle goes for an under slot on a lesser high school shortstop since there is not a huge difference and teams are wary of overpaying for a top pick that is not much better than others. Teams at the top may want to spread the money out instead. Said the strength of this draft is in the 30 to 70 picks.
Spoke highly of Ike Irish as a power hitter that could contribute fairly quickly. Did say Willits may eventually be the best player to come out of this draft.

Obviously my number 1 hope is that Holliday somehow falls to 5 but I'd rather take any of the top pitchers over any of the hs ss. Ill be pretty disappointed if Willits is the pick.

Of the pitchers at the top, I like Jamie Arnold better than Anderson or Doyle. I don't see any chance that the Cards take a swing at Hernandez at 5, it's far too risky when you're picking that high.
I'm very intrigued by JoJo Parker or Arquette at 5.
